10 Books I Loved in 2017

I am subscribed to the lovely Sanne’s “booksandquills” youtube channel and she posted the top 10 books she read in 2017. So, I decided to do it as well.

Here is my list of the top 10 books I’ve read in 2017!

  • The Hating Game

25883848A great contemporary romance about two co-workers up for the same promotion that discover that they don’t hate each other as much as they thought.

I loved it. Read it in two days and it became an instant favourite. I hope that they’ll make it into a movie adaptation because this was a perfect romantic comedy.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Milk and Honey

https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1491595510l/23513349.jpgI never thought I would ever like a poetry collection as much as I loved this one.

It was raw, beautiful, deep and personal. I really enjoyed it. I also read Rupi Kaur’s other collection and I liked it. This, in my opinion, is the best one.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • We Should All Be Feminists & Dear Ijeawele

Dear Ijeawele Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - Book23301805I had never read any feminist literature before and “We should all be feminists” is an amazing start. It’s easy to understand, it covers feminism’s most important topics and it is a great introduction for a newbie to the matter.

I also read “Dear Ijeawele” and I liked it even more than the other one. It was as informative as I thought it would be. It’s a great read for everybody but it’s fundamental for new parents or parents who want their children (girls AND boys) to be raised as feminists.

I absolutely recommend both of them. Please read them.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ / ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Dante and Aristotle Discover The Secrets of the Universe and The Inexplicable Logic of My Life

Aristotle and Dance discover the secrets of the universe Benjamin Alire Saenz - book23447923I read “Dante and Aristotle” while on my beach holiday and I loooooved it! I think I read it in less than two days. One evening I was out in the terrace, a soft breeze in my face, Tom Rosenthal’s music in my ears and I read. So much.

I have this wonderful memory of that evening and I really really liked the story.

Just like with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s books, I actually enjoyed the second one more than the first one.

“The Inexplicable Logic of my life” was so full of love, loss, grief, acceptance. I absolutely adored it. There wasn’t any romance in it, just family love and great great friendships.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ / ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • The Handmaid’s Tale

20528642I didn’t actually read this book because I listened to it. “Homeland”‘s Claire Danes was the narrator and I couldn’t have asked for a better person to read this book.

I probably would have loved the book anyways, but having her read it to me, make the experience so much better.

In this world-wide political climate, it’s more important than ever. Women’s oppression is sadly such a real and common issue.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

31434883I saw somebody talking about this book on Youtube, I put it in my TBR and I casually started reading it.

I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I loved the clarity and the honesty with which Gail Honeyman wrote Eleonor’s feelings, emotions and thoughts.
Her honest moments were the best.
I love the fact that she decided not to go down the “romantic relationship with the other character of the opposite sex” road. It would have ruined the entire book.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • The Hate U Give

32075671This book was so hyped on Booktube and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s about a girl who witnesses one of her friends being killed by the police and the aftermath of the event.

I was inspired by the “Black Lives Matter” movement and it’s so incredibly important.

It’s an amazing story that deals with loss, death, activism, racism, standing up for what you believe in, injustice and justice.
The characters are so well written and the story is truly compelling.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • What Happened

34114362I love this book. I was very well written, it read like a novel instead of a memoir. I thought Hillary Clinton did a great job. At times, her political self was a little bit too present: she sounded too much like she was still running for the precidency.

Of course, not living in the US, I don’t have a a perception of the problems affecting the country and I’m not an expert in politics and in the economy. I know very little about it, but I agreed with Hillary’s view of the world.

I leant about all the issues she cares about, the hard choices she had to make in her life and the problems she has been facing ever since she was a young woman in her 20s.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I’m 3 months late, but here are my favourite books of 2017!

Winter Beauty Haul 2017/2018

I haven’t talked about beauty for a long time but I’ve had some time to spare and I wanted to share the products I have recently (and not so recently) bought.

Yes, I am months behind. I know. Who cares.

SEPHORA Lips Cream Stain in 17

I decided to treat myself with a Sephora lipsticks. I’ve wanted to get my hands on one of these for a long time and I went it and got it.

A dark red matte liquid lipstick. It’s exactly what I’d been looking for. It’s probably the favourite lipstick colour of my entire collection.

It’s truly beautiful, it lasts for a long time and it doesn’t smudge.

It retails at 10.90€ in Italy.

Maybelline Fit Me Foundation in 110

Last year I bought this Maybelline foundation in the shade 115 and as my tan slowly disappeared, I got paler and paler. Soon, even n^ 115 was too dark and definitely too pink for me.

I think it’s incredibly difficult to find the perfect foundation for your skin and your undertone. Since I have quite a tight budget I can’t afford to splurge on a lot of brands and try them until I get the perfect one, even the drugstore ones.

I already have 5 bottles of foundations and it’s already too much. So many different shades! And most of them have been bought before I knew what I was doing with my makeup.

Anyway, even if n^110 is a bit ashy and it makes me look “ghost-like”, I love it. It has a light to medium coverage, it sets beautifully on the skin and it makes it look like actual skin and not some mask I’ve put on.

I’ve been mixing it with my Rimmel 24h foundation in 200 (one or two shades darker that the Maybelline one and still with a yellow undertone) and it gives me a better coverage, especially in those days when I want to look flawless. (don’t worry, I never do).

Price: 10.90€

IMG_8224KIKO Long-Lasting Wet & Dry Use Eyeshadow in 215

Kiko’s sales made me buy it! I went in just to browse and my mom was kind enough to get it for me.

It’s got so much glitter! I can’t wait to do a smokey eye and have sparkles all over my eyes!

And since I can use water with it, a couple of days ago I did a great glittery winged eyeliner look and I loved it!

It was on sale and I spent 5€, but the actual price might have been around 8 or 9 €, so a bit expensive for me.

IMG_8223Deborah Highlighter Face Powder Duo in 02 GOLD

I don’t know why I bought this product. It’s not too bad. It has two sides with a yellow-based highlighter and a pink one.

I haven’t tried other highlighters, to be fair. It seems like the italian makeup industry hasn’t figured out highlighters exist and people have been obsessed with them for ages!

This one is quite glittery and I’m not really sure I apply it in the right way. I’ve been using it non-stop for a month, trying to eventually figure out the correct method for putting in onto my face!

Price: 5.60€

IMG_8225ESSENCE The False Lashes Dramatic Volume Unlimited Mascara

The name is definitely a mouthful!

I saw the lovely Emily of BeautyWithEmilyFox on Youtube doing a video about her favourite Essence mascara and his was on her top 5 list. I have followed her recommendations and so far, I’ve loved every single product I purchased.

It’s a liduid-y formula and the bristles have a lot of product on but it’s volumizing, lenghtening and it lasts very well throughout the day.

One downside, it gets a bit clumpy and I can’t separate my lashes very well. I don’t mind it, I actually like it.

Price: 3.50€.

Let me know if you’ve tried any of these products and if you recommend anything cheap I should get my hands on!

Things We Should Leave in 2017

I know. The first month of 2018 is gone and nobody wants to go back to the past.

But I’ve just seen these two videos by Connor Franta and Arden Rose and I thought: “I love complaining so this is the perfect blog post for me!”

So here I am! A month late with lots of ranting to do!

Let me start off with the obvious:

The Current US President

Even if he is one of the worst people on Earth, these past two years have been hilarious. People say you should not find all of this funny because this administration is endangering millions and millions of people. And it’s true. I 100% agree. But I can’t help be incredibly entertained by it. Whenever there is news about Russia, collusion and general weird shit that happened, I need to know about it. And not just the general idea. I need to be aware of every single detail.

It’s awful, I know, but if it weren’t reality, it would have been the best tv show ever created.

Too Much Makeup

And here I’m not talking about using makeup to make yourself look similar to a celebrity for Halloween. Those are amazing and the people who do them are unbelievable talented.

I’m talking about excessive contouring, highlighting, long-ass eyelashes that you can see they’re fake for a mile distance and sadly, even more stuff!

I am so tired of looking through YouTube and seeing these people completely altering their appearance and then looking into the camera with a sultry look.

Stop. Please.

sultry looks bring me to my next point:

over sexualization of women and young girls.

Why do women are always expected to be sexy? Why are people are over sexualizing teenagers? (Yes, I’m talking about the Stranger Things cast members. They are children. Stop.)

It’s fucking disgusting.

Talking about something disgusting… sexual predators.

Reading and listening to the stories these women have had to go through made me sick to my stomach. I couldn’t even read the entire articles.

I was so amazed and inspired by all the amazing women who came forward and stood up for themselves. It took and unbelievable amount of courage and I applaud them and stand with them.

Tabù Topics

Let’s be more upfront and voice our issues and our problems. Like menstruation. 49% of the world population is female and we still can’t talk freely about our periods?

And what about our sexuality? In my small and close-minded town, talking about sexuality and the different life styles makes people uncomfortable. Why should it?

You’re straight? Good for you!

You’re gay? Great!

You’re trying to figure it out? You go girl, and explore!

Why is it so hard to understand?!

Most Online Influencers

I admit it. I did follow some of them on Youtube. The big ones like the old-school british ones and a couple of americans but when they reach the point that it is their job, I unsubscribe. (Aside from Hannah and Stefan Michalak. Go check them out. Their videos are absolutely stunning.

I like watching people who create content because they are passionate about it. Not because they are required to.

I don’t care about their fabulous lives and high living standards. I DO NOT CARE. I want to see how other regular people live and what they are passionate about.

Superhero TV shows

I’ve said it before, but I feel like I need to repeat it again. STOP. There are too many white straight costume-clad superhero.

I want more minorities represented in the superhero world, I want more powerful women in fantasy.

Let’s do it, please.

What are the things you wish you could live in 2017? Write me!

Jenna Coleman

I love Jenna Coleman.

Actually, to tell the truth, when she was cast to replace the adorable Karen Gillian on Doctor Who, I did not like her. Sorry Jenna.

But as soon as I saw her with Matt Smith and the lovely character she portrayed: I was in love. The chemistry she had with Matt was wonderful. Absolutely stunning. And even though she left Doctor Who, I started following her career. And her fashion appearances.

Let’s just say that from soap opera actress, Jenna turned into a true queen of the red carpet. Although the majority of what she wears is something I would NEVER go for, it is still magnificent.

I particularly love her in this picture from the premiere of Victoria, the ITV drama about Queen Victoria.

Jenna Coleman Victoria Screening London 2016.jpg

I love this look. It is definitely something I would wear and I did. Several times after seeing this photo. I absolutely ADORE IT!

Jenna Coleman Victoria Screening London 2016 2.jpg

So I want to share the product I use in order to re-create this warm and, at the same time, sultry makeup.

I wasn’t able to find the exact products her makeup artist used (This is her instagram page), but I tried to make it word with whatever I have.

I apply the gold/coppery creamy eyeshadow by Pupa in the shade 002 all over the lid, blending it up towards the brow.

IMG_6884(1) - Copia Arrows.jpg

So then I take the orange and light brown shade from the palette mixed together (they have no names. Sorry.) and apply them on top of the gold eyeshadow, blending them until I get the shade I want. Then I take the same two colours and I apply them on my lower lashes. And you can go as low as you want and make it as grungy as you want.

Just to give it a little bit more depth, you can put some of this dark brown Kiko “Smart Colour eyeshadow in 05  in the crease or (what I actually do most times), close to the lash line and blending it with the other colours. Also, just a tiny bit into the outer part of the lower lashes.

Lots and lots of mascara and then the lipstick! This lipstick is the KIKO Velvet Passion Matte Lipstick in 317 “Wine”.

As a little bonus, you can take some sparkly orange eyeshadow and put a bit in the inner corner in order to give it some “pizzazz” (I think it’s a word.).

So, this is my take on the look. I have tried to take a picture of the look on me, but it is shit and I don’t want to post it.

Also, I got inspired by the look Emma (who has the beauty channel EmmasRectangle on Youtube) did. So if you want to actually see it, head over to her channel and watch the amazing tutorial she did.

Hope you enjoyed this post. It’s the first time I did something like this and I’m not sure if the format is right for me.

Thanks for reading!
