Master of None

I can’t even remember how I discovered this series, but it’s just magnificent. Created by Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang, the show talks about the life of a 30-year-old actor named Dev who lives in NYC.

Aziz (who created wrote and produced the series) is also the main character. The series deals with extremely important social issues, from the alternative birth control Plan B, appreciating immigrant parents, a relationship in this modern and technological age and discrimination, sexism and injustice.

It’s a comedy, but not some dumb and idiotic thing with no actual depth. I was really surprised by the quality of the show. Not because I didn’t have faith in Aziz, but it said comedy and the trailer is upbeat and funny. I hadn’t realized the social issues that were being discussed.

Season 2 is coming out tomorrow on Netflix and I plan on completely putting my life on hold and binge watching the shit out ot of this new season.

I love this series so much because it’s real. I’ve been saying it a lot in past blog post (This is us mainly…), but this is what I’m looking for in a tv series.

The cast is really good, really authentic, diverse and really talented! Denise and Arnold are just two amazing characters and Lena Waithe and Eric Wareheim are hilarious. Also, Dev’s mom and dad are Aziz’s real parents! And they are soo funny!

Left to Right: Aziz’s parent Shoukath and Fatima Ansari, Alan Yang, Lena Waithe, Aziz Ansari, Kelvin Yu, Eric Wareheim and Noel Wells

All the episodes are amazing, but if I had to choose, episodes 4-6-7-8 are the best.

Episode 4 is called: Indians on TV, where Dev talks about the lack of roles for Indian men to play and the stereotypes he has to overcome. He inadvertently sees an email from an executive producer with racism remarks and he had to decide how to act.

Episode 6: Nashville: Dev invites Rachel, the girl he likes, to a spontaneous trip to Nashville. The episode is just adorable. It’s something different than the usual first date and it’s truly delightful.

AND NOW, MY FAVOURITE! Episode 7: Ladies and Gentleman: This one is pure gold. Rachel and Dev’s friend Denise explain to their friend the constant misogyny that is (sadly) part of our everyday life. I was really impressed by the episode. It’s rare to see a TV that deals with this horrible issue as well as “Master of None”. What I truly appreciated about it, is that they stated that men can’t understand the situation. They don’t face the same problems as women do and consequently, aren’t aware of how big the problem actually is.

Episode 8: Old People: I also loved that Aziz and Alan Yang (the two main creators of the show) took the time to dedicate an episode to the elderly. I love my Grandmother and I realized I don’t spend as much time with her as I want to. We tend to forget that they can become lonely, especially if widowed. Even though the episode is absolutely silly sometimes, it’s thought-provoking and it will definitely make you pick up the phone and call your grandparents.

I am a huge fan of Aziz… both of this stand-up work and his acting roles… and don’t get me started on his book “Modern Romance” because I LOVED IT!

I’m really excited about season 2, mainly because it was partially shot here in Italy, so I can’t wait to see how Aziz decided to portray my country.

I hope you’ll check it out and you’ll let me know your opinions.

See you!

March Favourites 2017

I haven’t had the greatest month. Not at all.

Life wise, I started studying for my driving license for the 5th time. I contacted my professors at Uni for material for my exams. I cried and freaked out about it for days, but nevermind. I’ve been anxious for weeks and not sleeping very well. And felt like shit for the longest time. But it’s okay!!! I’m not extremely sad! *said in the most sarcastic voice ever*

To get my morale up, I started writing down all of the things I like this month.  But then I happily realized that the list was longer than expected. Soooo, I’ll be splitting them in two and in this post, I’ll focus on the general stuff and the next one will be all about beauty.

Enough blabbing, let’s get on with it.

  • Stationery clips and Stabilo Pen

IMG_6597

I got these clips at “Tiger” on September and until recently I had lost them! I basically took apart my bedroom, searched everywhere in the house and of course my dad had hidden them on top of the cabinet in the kitchen. COME ON. But I recently found them and I’ve been using them for literally everything. They are absolutely adorable and unbelievable cheap. I’m in love.

On the other hand,  I stole this pen from my sister only to figure out that it was actually my mom’s and that she was pretty angry she lost it. I’m still keeping it because it’s amazing. And I love how my handwriting turns out. I’m so going to re-purchase this and if there are, I’m without a doubt getting it in different colours.

  • Gilmore Girls Fanfictions

gilmore-girls-netflix-series-posters

I’m a Fanfiction nut. I have 2 apps and I even paid 0.99€ for the premium version of one. And I have no regrets. I have almost 400 stories in my favourites and I have read A LOT OF THEM multiple times. But since I got obsessed with Gilmore Girls and in particular Jess and Rory, I’ve been basically reading the entire section on FanFiction.net. Here is a selection of the ones I’ve most enjoyed: Stop Running, They Say it isn’t easy, The Runaways, The KidThe Kid Some of them are filled with clichés and predictable plots, but honestly: who fucking cares.

  • Netflix

netflixlogo2016

March marked the wonderful beginning of my relationship with Netflix. And so far, it’s been great. There are a lot of shows that are missing or aren’t complete but I’ve been loving it. I’ve binge-watched all 6 seasons of New Girl, started watching “Grace and Frankie”, skipped from one episode to another of “Friend” and I have the possibility of choosing between 7 seasons and the Year in the Life special of Gilmore Girls.

I’ve been really into stand up comedy recently and Aziz Ansari and Trevor Noah are SPECTACULAR. Highly recommend.

  • This is Us  – Last three episodes marathon

This Is Us - Season 1

I’ll be brief because I’ll start crying. I saved the last three episodes until the finale came out and then binge watched them. And then watched “The Aftershow” on Youtube. I was devastated, it has scarred me for life and I’m in love. Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore were unbelievably talented in the last episode and Sterling K Brown made me had emotions I didn’t even know human were capable of feeling. Can’t wait for season 2. I’ll be crying.

  • The Bachelor Finale

58472a417ca5765f5638b6c7_o_f_v1I spoke about this at length in a recent post and the 12 weeks I’ve spent with the bachelor nation watching the show was the weirdest, most amazing ever. It’s the most ridiculous programm I’ve seen in my life and italian television is just as bad.

  • Grey’s Anatomy s13e16: “Who Is He (And What Is He to You)?”

I’ve been regularly watching Grey’s Anatomy for 3 years now and this episode finally resembled the greatness of the show’s earlier seasons. After Cristina and Derek’s departure (and previously Mark and Lexie’s) the show felt weird. But this episode was finally GOOD. Jesse Williams isn’t only a good looking person and an involved activist, he is pretty talented and he finally had the chance to shine. His presence on the screen was spectacular, captivating and graceful. I already liked him, but it was after this interview with Trevor Noah on “The Daily Show” that I started appreciating him more. The episode itself was great, full of drama, love, complicated relationship. One of the best “on the character” focus-episode they have produced.

This next thing is not television related and it’s a book.

  • The Hating Game

I don’t even know how I found out about this book, but I’m so glad I did. This is exactly the chick-flic that I LOVE! It’s not dumb like most of them, there are no sexist messages, the story itself is not something revolutionary and particularly new but I read it in 2 days. To give a brief summary, the story is about Lucy and Joshua, two co-workers who despise each other but are both up for the same promotion. But as they try to win the hating game, they might discover that they don’t dislike each other that much.

At times there are cliché moments and some typical romantic stuff, but I absolutely loved it. There is no bullshit insta-love, no unnecessary sexy times, no soul mate shit. If they don’t make this into a movie, Hollywood is losing a great opportunity for a brilliant brand new rom-com. PLEASE MAKE IT INTO A MOVIE! OR EVEN BETTER, A TV SERIE! PLEASE!

That’s it! These were my non-beauty related things I loved during the month of March. To see what I’ve been loving makeup-wise, here is the link for the blog post!

Hope you enjoyed this! Have a lovely day!

Bones Series Finale

SPOILERS FOR ALL 12 SEASONS OF BONES

I’ve been watching Bones since season 5 in the remote 2010. I can’t believe it’s been 7 years! During this time I have definitely lost interest. I’m sorry, but it got out of hand.

Let’s just start with season 5 itself. The brain tumor, Booth’s memory loss… the only great thing about this season was the 100th episode where they show us the first time Forensic Anthropologist Temperance Brennan meets Agent Seeley Booth of the FBI. That and my adorable Lance Sweets’ annoyance was hilarious. And from there, it went downhill.

bones-sdcc-2016-fullAccording to my TV shows tracker app, I have 40 episodes left to watch. Basically 2 seasons. So yeah… I have a lot of new and more exciting series to watch and after the mixed schedule with only 13 episodes in season 7 and the absolutely ridiculous plot line of Hodgins getting super injured. Come on.

And Christine’s birth in the shed? OH GOD. JUST NO! And how could I forget that weird episode in which Dr. Brennan dreams her dead mother or has a vision about her. I don’t remember. That was ridiculous.

What I loved about Bones was the darkness of its earlier seasons: the murders, Brennan’s coldness and the gruesome of the whole thing.

I’m really sad Bones ended… I felt the same emotions when Castle ended. I loved the show. Well,  I loved season 1-2-3 and 4. Out of 8. Anyway, I have this feeling of nostalgia. Even though I didn’t watch it regularly, I knew Bones was there. I knew that I could pick it up whenever I wanted.

There are some episode I remember with great fondness (Did I just quote an interview with Emily Blunt? I think I just did…): the 100th, the episode where Mr Vincent-Nigel Murray dies, the episode with the body in the chocolate bar (I couldn’t eat one for weeks) and frankly many more.  Oh! The one where they thought they had JFK’s remains in the lab! HILARIOUS!

And can we talk about poor dear adorable shrink Lance Sweets? I believe I stopped watching the show after they killed him off. The actor needed time off for shooting a movie and they just wrote him off. I was deeply saddened by the whole thing. He was just adorable.

I can’t actually review the last few seasons because I’ve seen only a handful of episodes, but as a longtime fan of “Bones” I felt I had the duty of remembering and bidding farewell to this beloved show.

“The End in the End”

I was reading this article on cinemablend.com and they are so right. The last episode had everything that made it the typical last episode of a cable TV show: they solved the crime, there were major life-changing discoveries, character moving on to better things and a general overview of all the other forensic team.

Bones_S12E12_-_05I quite liked it actually. Aside from the unnecessary dramatic music that at times was overwhelming and almost as loud as the dialogue.

I felt like Dr Brennan’s concussion (brain injury or whatever) was useless at the beginning, but after her powerful conversation with Booth, I definitely changed my mind. I related to it….

At the end of the episode, I was satisfied by the ending. Not totally impressed with the whole series killer/Zack situation and the subsequent explosion of the Jeffersonian. Come on, they started with the “Cam left her purse around” on the previous episode. I GET IT!

Also, if you want to check out a truly creepy serial-killer-turning-his-victims-in-marionettes, you should definitely check out Fringe’s episode “Marionette” (season 3 ep 9). Absolutely disturbing.

Anyway, I’m still sad it’s over. Bones was with me for 7 years and I’m really disappointed to see it go… But if they had renewed it for a 13th season, they would have most definitely ruined it.

Goodbye Bones. Thanks for the years we’ve spent together.

Broadchurch Season 3 Premiere

BREAKING NEWS!

DAVID TENNANT IS BACK ON TV!

I can’t believe this day is actually here! I couldn’t wait any longer! David Tennant has a special place in my heart and seeing him back on TV made my day.

I know, I’m a week late with this post: I couldn’t come to terms with the happiness of having David back in my life.

Sirius Black.gif

Sadly, this is the last season that sees DI Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and DS Ellie Miller (or as we better know her “Millah”) fighting crime in a small community in Dorset, England.

After a jaw-dropping first season and a non-equally good second season, in the third one, we are three years in the future. And this time the crime is different.

The past seasons were all about Danny’s murder and the trial of his killer, but the crime that is being discussed is sexual assault.

And they dealt with it in the most sensitive and respectful way. When a horrible thing like this is portrayed on television, there is little to no depth about the difficulties and the immense struggle the victim has to go through. I feel like it’s been normalized and viewers aren’t shocked by it anymore. And this is NOT ok. This “rape culture” has to stop because it’s abominable.

From the first scene of the episode (Trish sat down in front of the police station), we see a different perspective, the victim’s. Chris Chibnall, the show’s writer, decided to approach this topic to raise awareness of the increasing number of unreported sexual assaults in the UK.

Coming back to the rest of the story, the Latimer’s are dealing with life in the best way they can. Beth and Mark are separated and they live in different houses and the two girls (in case you don’t remember Beth found out she was pregnant a couple of weeks after her son’s death).

Mark is also regretting the decision of giving a series of interviews for a book about his son Danny. Speaking of children, Ellie Miller is having some problems with her son Tom, who was caught watching porn at school. Like she didn’t have enough problems already.

Anyway, the episode swallowed me entirely. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. Lately, I’ve been easily bored by a lot of series but this kept me focused and on the edge of my seat.

vlcsnap-2015-02-16-22h30m30s228

Also, I reminded me how intense David Tennant’s acting is. His eyes are just… Every time he is on screen, he has this magnetic aura and his tortured expression always takes my breath away. He has a way of owning the screen and transmitting to the audience what the character is feeling. He is one of the finest British actors and I love him dearly. He definitely has a special place in my heart. And his accent on the show is gorgeous. ❤

And can we talk about Julie Hesmondhalgh performance!?! AMAZING!

And obviously the spectacular Olivia Coleman… ❤

I already know that this is probably going to be the highlight of March and probably of 2017.

Let me know if you’ve seen the episode and if you haven’t: GO CHECK IT OUT! NOW!
