Barry Season 1 – Review

Bill Hader in Barry (2018)I saw the promo for the show quite some time ago and I’ve been excited to see it ever since. It looked so weird, entertaining and with the darkest humour ever.

It is written, directed, created and produced by SNL alum and master impressionist Bill Hader and produced by Alec Berg who also is the executive producer of “Silicon Valley”.

The show is about a hitman (Hader) is assigned to kill this man, and this guy belongs to a theatre group in Los Angeles. Out of the blue, this ex-marine struggling with depression and PTSD, decides he wants to become an actor and that he’s actually talented enough to be one. Which he is definitely not. He joins a theatre group and meets all kind of different people, in particular Sally and he gets infatuated by her.

On top of this, Bill has amazing co-stars: Henry Wrinkler, Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, D’arcy Carden and more!

I’ve watched basically every interview Bill Hader has given, and he sad that he wanted to make the killing and the shooting seem as realistic as they could. When people are shot, and bloody is shown, it isn’t supposed to look fake for a comedic effect.

They wanted to make it true. And it is.

I had caught a glimpse of his dramatic range when he played Amy Schumer’s love interest in “Trainwreck” and again in this show. He is unbelievably good. I loved his performance. He was amazing.

Still, despite all the heavy topics, the show is so funny. My favourite characters have to be the two Chechen mobsters. They were hilarious. They had the best lines and the best delivery… I laughed out loud a couple of times. So good.

I loved Fuches and Barry’s relationship. It reminds me of the one Homeland’s Peter Quinn and Dar Adal had, although theirs is somehow less creepy.

Another great quality is how fake and unbearable Sally is. We, as the audience, can see her for how she is, a self-absorbed, arrogant and pretentious actress ready to stomp on anybody to succeed; on the other hand, Barry has a completely different perspective and does not see this side of her. I love that. So much. This gave us an insight on how Barry sees the world and other people. Truly magnificent.

Bill Hader and Sarah Goldberg in Barry (2018)

It is an already very tense show and they decided to build it even further by creating a connection with the Detective in charge of investigating the murder of one of the students in the acting class.

Spoiler alert…. Barry killed him.

I cannot really stress this enough. It’s such a great show. The premises is totally weird but somehow it works.

Last but not least, I am in love with the extremely short opening title: it’s a song called “Change for the World” by Charles Bradley and I am obsessed with it. It immediately went into my “soundtracks” playlist.

Have you seen Barry? Did you like it?

I’d love to know! Let’s interact!

Silicon Valley

I completely forgot Silicon Valley was coming back on TV, but I’m so glad it did. It airs on Sunday at 10PMon HBO for a total of 10 episode (season 4th finale will air on June 25th).

If you’re not familiar with the show, it’s about a group of computer engineers trying to build a successful company in ruthless Silicon Valley.

silicon-valley-season-3-poster

The main character is Richard Hendrix, a socially awkward engineer who develops an algorithm that can reduce immensely file sizes. At least this is what I think it does. More than half of the technological stuff is incomprehensible to me.

Fixated on the name “Pied Piper”, Richard brings his roommates and fellow programmers onto his project and creates his company. Right from the beginning, Richard is faced with one of the hardest decisions of his life: sell his algorithm for 10 million dollars to the evil Gavin Belson or keep the company and receive fundings for his app from Peter Gregory.

Along the lines, he meets my favourite character of the entire series: Jared. He is possibly the weirdest, most awkward and uncomfortable person ever. He is so self-sacrificing, unselfish and soooo maternal, especially towards Richard. But Jared (whose real name isn’t even Jared) isn’t the only brilliant character. The never-ending feud between Gilfoy and Dinesh is HILARIOUS and the Satanist and Pakistani programmers bring the bromance aspect to the show. Their competitiveness and insults are just the best. Another completely strange person on the show is Erlich Bachman, the owner of the house where they all live. He calls it his “incubator” and he tries to be kind of mentor… while been stoned the entire time.

Two other characters are Big Head, Richard’s best friend and an utterly useless and stupid programmer that is so clueless all the time! Sometimes he is so gullible and… it’s so funny! And of course Monica, possibly the only sane person of the bunch. She works for the company which has been founding the “Pied Pieper” company.

And I almost forget Jian Yang!!! He is an app developer who lives in Erlich’s “incubator” and has no links to “Pied Piper”. The hilarious thing about him is his problem in communicating, especially with Erlich… It’s such a good dynamic and it just makes me laugh so much!!!!!

The show itself is incredibly funny, rude and sometimes stupid. But so so SO good. It’s ridiculous and completely insane.

ATTENTION! THE FOLLOWING CONTENT CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE 4TH SEASON!

silicon-valley-season-4daniel-clowes-posterLast Sunday, the show premiered its fourth season and I already know it’s going to be amazing. I was a little disappointed that Richard left Pied Pieper and started working on his crazy project on the new internet.

I felt like Jared at the end… I did not want to let go of Richard! I wanted the team to stay together!!! I was so sad!

But the return of Russ Hanneman definitely lifted my mood. His rant in front of the (wrong) elementary school was spectacular and sooooo embarrassing. I loved it.

I can’t wait for next Sunday for the second episode. If you’re interested in a really funny, unapologetic and often very rude comedy show, THIS is exactly what you need.

WOW, what a category. Right from the top of my head, I think Miguel Sapochnik deserves it.

The episode was one of the best directed things I have ever seen. The amount of people in it, the horses, basically every single shot WERE PERFECT. PERFECT.

Lesli Linka Glatter is also fantastic! She directed some of my favourite episodes of Homeland (Q&A, Long Time Coming, From A to B and back again).

Downton Abbey’s Michael Engler did an amazing job on the last ep…

Last Year’s Winner: Game of Thrones – “Mother’s Mercy” – David Nutter

WILL WIN: Game of Thrones – “Battle of the bastards” – Miguel Sapochnik

MY WINNER: Game of Thrones – “Battle of the bastards” – Miguel Sapochnik….. But please, give the second Emmy to Lesli Linka Glatter! PLEASE!! SHE IS AMAZING!!

I have discovered Silicon Valley just this year and I loved it. Geeky, nerdy and the cast is soooo funny!

As I have established this past week, I don’t like “Veep”, so….. Sorry…

In my opinion, it should go to Aziz. The episode is incredible, directed very well, there are time jumps and Aziz was great.

Last Year’s Winner: Transparent – “Best New Girl” – Jill Soloway

WILL WIN: Master of None – “Parents” – Aziz Ansari

MY WINNER: Master of None – “Parents” – Aziz Ansari

I won’t even talk about Game of Thrones because it was written perfectly. And  Mr. Robot!??! Come on!! Spectacular!!!

And could I ever get Downton Abbey out of my mind!? So beautiful!

I won’t choose.. Too difficult.
