70th Primetime Emmy Awards – Commentary, Reactions and Best Dressed

The Emmys happened this morning! From midnight to 5AM I was glued to the screen, watching the Red Carpet and then the actual ceremony.

emmys-2018-review

Hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che, I liked the show. It was quick, efficient but… kinda boring?

It was a bit bland and there was very little tension! They announced the categories so quickly that I couldn’t even work up any sort of suspense. And having the narrator (??) / voice-of-God person read the nominees’ names might have saved time, but it felt too rushed. Moreover, they took unnecessary breaks between less important categories rather than the ones people are notoriously interested in.

The banter between the presenters was as awkward as always with the exception of Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg, obviously. He is adorable, nothing he does is ever not entertaining.

Betty White is obviously an american treasure but bringing her on stage felt unnecessary. I get that she is so important but that poor woman is 96. Leave her at home. Don’t parade her around.

And as much as I love Maya Rudolf and Fred Armisen, their segments fell so incredibly flat. It was not funny.

I won’t even talk about the proposal because I was so embarrassed and I hated it so much. Like, so much. I would have run out of the theatre screaming in horror. I hated it. But congratulations, I guess…

Not unto the part that left me angry and disappointed.

They bragged about how diverse the nominees were and yet,

22 out of the 26 awards given out were won by white people.

Only 4 non-white people won.

How is that possible?

The irony is that at the beginning they did this great opening with a diverse cast singing about how diverse they were. And then they didn’t awarded any Emmys to said diverse group of people.

WHAT?!

p.s. they should have let Kate McKinnon host. She is the best. And also a woman.

Atlanta didn’t win anything, which is a disgrace. Atlanta’s “Teddy Perkins” deserved the award for Outstanding Directing. And Matthew Rhys as best lead actor? Sterling K Brown was in his same category. Sterling.

I also have bone to pick with the outstanding leading actress in a drama. I want to say that I LOOOOOVE Claire Foy and her performance was magnificent but they overlooked Sandra Oh and Elisabeth Moss. If it were up to me, it would not have gone to Claire.

And the supporting actor in a drama series? Peter Dinklage? He is always brilliant but this season did not shine a light on him and it was a little bit weak.

Thandie Newton was amazing in Westworld. She was truly magnificent but I can’t help but feeling Yvonne Strahovski was robbed.

And the awkwardness in the outstanding variety talk series when people started chanting Stephen Colbert‘s name and John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight won? YIKES! I love them both but I think I might have wanted The Late Show to win.

Now I want to gush about two people I was so proud and thrilled they won:

Bill Hader for Outstanding Lead Actor in a comedy and John Mulaney for Outstanding Writing in a Variety Special.

I’m so proud of them.

Before showing you the selection of dresses I fell in love with, a special shout out to shows like “RuPaul Drag Race” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” for bringing parts of the LBGT+ community to the screen.

I’ll say it again… Atlanta was robbed. And sure, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel was fantastic but cool it. A few of those awards were questionable.

NOW UNTO THE FASHION!

70th Primetime Emmy Awards: Drama (Supporting Actors, Lead Actors and Outstanding Series)

Even more drama!

Check out the other categories in the Drama section: Writing, Directing and Guest Actors! And the other categories!

70th Primetime Emmy Awards: Comedy (Writing, Directing and Guest Actors) and 70th Primetime Emmy Awards: Limited Series, Variety and Reality.

Now let’s talk about some dramas!

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series

2018-09-03 (3).png

Of course. Like I can decide a possible winner. Sure.

I’m not a huge fan of Millie Bobby Brown and even though Lena Headey was brilliant as usual, there are performances that impacted me more.

Ann Dowd was spectacular as always and Alexis Bledel made me feel so many emotions. This role was made for her and she gave it 110%.

I’m undecided between Yvonne Strahovski and Vanessa Kirby, but even though I am a little bit in love with Vanessa and Princess Margaret, I think the Emmy should go to Yvonne.

She was mesmerizing.

2017 Winner: Ann Down as Aunt Lydia, “The Handmaid’s Tale”

My Winner: Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy, “The Handmaid’s Tale”

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series

2018-09-03 (5).png

Another tough category. Wow.

I love the Game Of Thrones guys. I do. I have a crush on Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Mandy Patinkin is a treasure and I love him and David Harbour was unbelievable amazing as Jim Hopper.

I can’t decide between Matt Smith and Joseph Fiennes. I really want Matt to win. I think he deserves it so much but the other nominees are so amazing as well.

Out of loyalty I’m gonna go with Matt.

2017 Winner: John Lithgow as Winston Churchill, “The Crown”

My Winner: Matt Smith as Prince Philip, “The Crown”

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series

lead actress in drama.png

I’m not familiar with Tatiana Maslany and Keri Russell’s performances, to be fair.

Also, Sandra Oh is the first Asian-American woman to be nominated for an Emmy as Lead Actress. And she deserves it so much. Her performance in Killing Eve was perfect.

Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II was as brilliant as always and Elizabeth Moss literally tore my heart out of my chest. I can describe her performance as heartbreaking. She broke my heart.

I can’t really talk much about Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores because I was so concentrated on understanding the plot and I lost track of everything else.

2017 Winner: Elisabeth Moss as June / Offred, “The Handmaid’s Tale”

My Winner: I’m picking two winners because this is my blog so my rules: Elisabeth Moss as June / Offred, “The Handmaid’s Tale” and Sandra Oh as Eve Polastri, “Killing Eve”.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

So….. I was not that impressed by this category. For some reason, I thought this category would not include these people.

I don’t really know Jason Bateman and Matthew Rhys but I like all the other performances.

I can’t really decide. As I said before, I did not understand a single thing that happened on Westworld so, to sum up my choice is between Milo and Sterling.

I can’t choose. I don’t really have an opinion here. (surprise surprise. As you can see, I am very opinionated. And not just about TV).

2017 Winner: Sterling K Brown as Randall Pearson, “This is Us”

My Winner: Sterling K Brown or Jeffrey Wright (Sorry Milo).

Outstanding Drama Series

drama series.png

Well, well, well… The BIG category.

If I follow my instincts, my gut says “The Handmaid’s Tale”. Season 2 was heartbreaking and so intense.

But what about “The Crown”? And “Stranger Things 2”? That was so good! And so much better than season 1! Like, so much better. Even I watched it twice!

In these posts, I’m coming off as a non-Game of Thrones-fan. And I like the show… I’m jut so tired of it and there were some things I was no on board with. I’m tired of it. Thank God the next one is the last season.

This is Us broke my heart in a million pieces and it’s an amazing depiction of family life and deep issues every one of us faces in their lives.

Westworld is like… so well written, so well-directed and so well acted, but I don’t know what it is about and what it all means. It makes no sense.

I’m sure “The Americans” is amazing but I stopped at season 2. It was not for me.

Concluding, I don’t know. They are all Emmy worthy shows. I think I might be disappointed only if Westworld wins. Because I am so annoyed with it. Like, so annoyed.

2017 Winner: The Handmaid’s Tale

My Winner: every one but Westworld.

Here we are!

The Emmys are almost here! Remember to watch the ceremony on September 17th on NBC! Hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost.

First Impressions: Killing Eve & The Bold Type

Another round of first impressions!

This time, as you have probably already guessed from the title, it’s about BBC America’s Killing Eve and FreeForm’s The Bold Type!

These are my thoughts on the pilots of these two shows.

I didn’t research them or tried to find out a lot because of spoilers. My opinions are solely based on the first episode.

But let’s dive into the first one, shall we?

KILLING EVE

killing eve poster poster.jpgI. Was. Hooked. From. The. First. Scene.

I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. And this means it’s absolutely captivating.

It’s about a MI6 agent (Sandra Oh) who is trying to track down a brilliant and very elusive assassin (Jodie Comer). Sandra Oh gives her best performance. And Jodie Comer gives me the chills.

She is absolutely terrifying and her performance is magnetic. The story is so compelling and unbelievably intense. Two complex and layered women as leads.

FINALLY!!!

And one of them is Asian-American! I’m loving the inclusion and representation! The show is extremely well done.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it were nominated for a few Emmys. It has Phoebe Waller-bridge written all over it. (Pun intended). She did in fact write it and she is an executive producer.

Anyway, I’m loving “Killing Eve” and I’m in awe of the actor’s performances, the writing and the overall final product.

I totally expect to see it nominated for a bunch of Emmys on July 12th. (TODAY!!!!!!)

THE BOLD TYPE

The Bold Type poster poster.jpg

As the last few seconds played out and the screen went black, I murmured:

“I’m not fucking impressed”

This show stars Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee, and Meghann Fahy playing three girls working at a feminist fashion magazine. It’s inspired by the life of the former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles.

I feel like they’re trying to be feminists and not really succeeding. They’re trying to be edgy and again, not succeeding.

It is supposed it be a show about empowering women, showing different types of women and yet, we are facing three thin, gorgeous and beautiful ladies working at a fashion magazine. And it’s not empowering. It’s the first episode and they have had a fight, they have judged each other’s decisions and yelled at each other on a subway platform.
And they call this feminism? Women empowering each other?
I’m a bit sceptical.
Of course, it’s not easy writing a feminist show and be inclusive: it’s such a broad topic with opposite views within itself. But let’s try not to mix up friendship with feminism. They are two separate things the show might be confusing and overlapping.

Just because they are friends, it doesn’t mean they are feminists.

Sure, the head of the magazine is a (white) woman, there is a lesbian Muslim photographer being imprisoned for smuggling vibrators into her country and there is a diverse staff… but is that enough?

Risultati immagini per the bold type season 1 promotional photos

It’s so glossy and perfect. It feels like they’re trying so hard to be edgy and also maintain that camera ready, perfect and never a hair-out-of-place vibe. They’re too perfect!

Sure, I want pretty people on TV, but they come in all shape, sizes and races…

If your tag line is: “Feminism is only our second favourite F word”, you gotta deliver. Don’t come here bullshitting me around.

Maybe it was over-hyped to me, I might have had high expectations for it and this might have doomed me.It’s not bad but I’m like… meh.

And it all ends with a Lumineers song… I can’t deal with this right now.

I might change my mind as I keep watching but so far, I expected more.

So… I was completely captivated by “Killing Eve” and definitely not impressed by “The Bold Type”.

Have you seen any of these shows? Did you like them? Do you think “Killing Eve” will get any Emmy nominations? Let me know your opinions!

Killing Eve, The Bold Type, Fleabag and Riverdale – Tv Shows I’m Bringing With Me On Holiday – Part 1

It’s finally summer time!

I’ve finished my exam session almost a month ago, the concert I helped organising went perfectly and my birthday was barely acknowledged. (I’m not complaining it’s exactly what I wanted)

3 weeks at the beach, no internet, no people (aside from my extended family) and so much relaxing. I am excited to go. I’m bringing lots of tv shows, books, music… I plan on relaxing from the moment I wake up to the minute I go to sleep.

There is one huge downside: no internet.

Therefore, I have a list of show I’ll be bringing with me.

KILLING EVE

https://mr.comingsoon.it/imgdb/SerieTV/serie/1763/1763.jpgI had heard “Grey’s Anatomy” ‘s Sandra Oh was coming back to TV but I didn’t make a big deal out of it. Until now! I should have kept an eye on it because it is created, produced, directed and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is also behind “Crashing” and “Fleabag” and was in Broadchurch with my main man David Tennant. And not to mention the other protagonist of the show, Jodie Comer. She played Kate in the BBC’s “Doctor Foster”.

I don’t really know what the story is about. I’ve tried to avoid it as much as I could. I want the element of surprise. I know it involves Spies, the MI5 and an assassin. So I’m super intrigued.

THE BOLD TYPE

Risultati immagini per the bold type posterI can’t believe this show escaped me as well! I’ve heard it’s quite a feminist show. (apparently mostly white feminist, but feminist nonetheless.)

It’s inspired by the life of the former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles. I have no clue who she is and what the magazine is about, so I’m going in knowing nothing. Literally. Apparently, it’s a recurring theme in this post.

I’ve heard people say it’s like a modern version of “The Devil Wears Prada”. I’ll let you know my thoughts!

RIVERDALE

Risultati immagini per riverdale posterI know. I’m trash.

I swore to myself I wasn’t going to watch this. But my sister is kind of buddy-watching it with one of her friends and I gave up. This is so addictive. Just like Pretty Little Liars. I should hate this but I love it so much.

It’s so bad. Like, really bad. The acting, the dialogue and directing is garbage but I can’t stop thinking about it. Well done, The CW. Well done.

This show is about Riverdale, a small american town where a young teenage boy dies and secrets start to unravel. It’s basically “Pretty Little Liars” meets “Gossip Girl” (there is an actual narrator Gossip Girl-style) and “Twin Peaks”.

It’s garbage and I love it.

Risultati immagini per b99 holt pure garbage

FLEABAG

Risultati immagini per fleabag posterPhoebe Waller Bridge’s Amazon and BBC Three’s TV show about a woman trying to live her London life after experiencing a tragedy.

I can’t believe I have to say this again but… I know very little about this one too. I know there is Olivia Coleman (KWEEN!!!!) and a racy scene involving her and a video of one of President Obama’s speeches.

It received great reviews so I can’t wait to see it. I say this even though it has been on my TO-WATCH list for at least a year and a half.

Here is part 1 of the list of shows I’ll be bringing with me on holiday. YES, I’M NOT JOSHING AROUND. IT’S PART 1, PEOPLE.

Have you got any recommendation for me? Are there any shows you think more people should watch? Let me know!

You can find me here, or on Twitter or you can send me an email!
