“Concentrate on the music. Ignore the noise.”, Mozart In The Jungle – Season 4 Review

Hai Lai and Rodrigo are back!!!

I’ve been following “Mozart in the Jungle” for quite a while and I’ve been waiting more than a year for this next season.

Starring Lola Kirke, Gael Garcia Bernal and created by Alex Timbers, Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman, the show revolves around a New York based Orchestra and the issues they face to keep the boat afloat and keep performing. mv5bmjizntyyotkyov5bml5banbnxkftztgwnzk5nzyzndm-_v1_sy1000_cr006751000_al_

I’ve already written a review about the show before the premiere of season 3 and I HAD to talk about this one.

It’s quite different from its previous series. At the end of season 3, we left Hailey with her vision of Marianne, Mozart’s older sister after having slept with Rodrigo.

Following the whole “The Fiamma” fiasco with the horrendous acting of Monica Bellucci, this was a breath of fresh air.

Although it focuses mostly on Rodrigo and Hailey’s new-found romantic relationship and the struggles and issues they will eventually face. The Maestro calling himself “The Boyfriend” a thousand times without fully understanding the meaning behind it was hilarious.

He is even crazier this season. Absolutely mental. He makes no sense, has literally no normal connections with other people other than Hailey and on top of that, he has lost his muse: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself.

I adored how much Rodrigo and Hailey physically connected with each other, somehow finding occasions to touch the other one. Usually in TV relationship, it’s not something that is shown and the actors are in contact with each other only whenever it’s explicitly required. I thought this was a quirk that made the show so much more realistic.

The trope “I feel inferior because my boyfriend is more successful, famous and better than me” was unnecessary: it diminished their relationship and their connection. It was a “girl-power” move that I fully support but at the same time I didn’t like the way it was executed. Mixing professional and personal life is never a good idea and this trope bummed me out. Everybody knows that. Come on.

I loved Cynthia’s commitment to the youth Orchestra, Thomas’ path to reinvent classical music performances and to implement new ideas, the Orchestra’s love and support for Hailey.

Speaking of Hailey, her quest to make it in a field mostly dominated by men, performing male composers pieces was inspiring. Her determination to make it in that difficult field while empowering other musicians and composers was perfect for these times of revolution. (Despite being written and shot before the rise of the “#metoo” and “Time’sUp” movements in recent months.)

There is always a conceptual and visually artistic episode and this one involved a traditional Japanese tea ceremony and LSD type hallucinations of both Rodrigo and Hailey.

Concluding, if you have Amazon Prime Video, do yourself a favour and watch it. You won’t regret it.

P.S. And how could I forget Liberace!!!! Instead of Mozart, Maestro Rodrigo started seeing Liberace! Costume, glitters, sequins and all! I love it!!!!

Suits Season 7A Finale Freakout (I know, I’m 4 months late)

Disclaimer! This post contains strong language and spoilers for all seasons of Suits.

It has been almost  four months since the “Suits” summer finale, and I am still not okay. I am baffled and at the same time over the moon about what happened in episode 710.

I’ve been very sceptical about this season, I was expecting something entirely different from the finale of season six, where we see Harvey and Donna holding hands at the end and Mike been finally accepted into the bar association. Although Jessica left of the show last season, she continued to appear throughout this 7A, and I couldn’t be more excited. I adore the whole cast, but she is truly magnificent. A badass black woman in power. I love her.

But without much further do… let’s talk about the thing every single person in the suits fandom is talking about: the kiss.

I was expecting something along the lines of this, since the title of the episode is “Donna”. I wasn’t ready for how amazing and mind-blowing it was.

And I thought they weren’t going to leave it in the last 30 seconds of the show but this is what they did. I waited the entire episode for something to happen between Harvey and Donna and it didn’t. The countdown for the following show had already begun and I was sure they weren’t going to show anything else but when Louis made that speech about him and Sheila, taking advantage of the opportunity and actually expressing his feelings for her, I knew something was going to happen.

Producer Aaron Korsh has always been sceptical about Donna and Harvey together as a couple he said multiple times, but I don’t care. The entire storyline with Dr Agard becoming Harvey’s girlfriend after being his therapist was just bullshit. Everybody knows it. But if this is what is necessary for Harvey to comprehend the extent of his feelings for Donna, I’m not complaining.

Well, I am complaining because it has ruined half a season, one of my favourite character’s personality, the awesomeness of the show which has become a joke and the overall vibe of the show. Am I angry? FUCK YEAH.

I don’t care (but I soooo do) what he has to go through to finally be in and happy relationship, but I believe he has to end up with Donna.

Mike said it in 613 with this amazing exchange:

There are fantastic episodes such as “the other time”, and multiple others where you see the deep affection that Harvey has for Donna and vice versa.

Before, when she was the secretary, them being together it didn’t make a lot of sense because there was still this disparity.

Now she is COO of Pearson Specter Litt, she makes decisions about the firm and she counts as much as Harvey and Louis. They are equals. He’s not her boss any more, she’s not his secretary. They have a shot of being together in a Jane Eyre sort of thing.

I’ve heard stupid comments and theories about sexual harassment, Donna kissing Harvey without his consent and some bullshit like that. To the people wandering around telling this bullshit I say one thing. Fuck off. You don’t deserve Suits.

Now I’m just waiting for the announcement of 7B and they’re taking their sweet time!

If you haven’t been living under a rock, you probably know that Meghan Markle is engaged with Prince Harry and therefore leaving the show. The network announced her departure but they still haven’t said anything about the premiere date of 7B.

Also, still no word on whether Patrick J Adams is leaving as well and if there will be a season 8.

Please, USA Network. Don’t leave us hanging. TELL US SOMETHING.

I leave you with the gif of the kiss because it’s AMAZING.

You’re welcome.

November 2017: Books I’m Thankful For

I found this great group on Goodread.com that gives you monthly recommendation on books that other people enjoyed!

It think it’s a great wait to discover novels that otherwise I would have never discovered.

So, here is my personal list of books I’m thankful for:

Trevor Noah Born a Crime - bookI loved this book. Absolutely loved it. I’ve been telling every single person I know to read it. I’ve already talked about this book on my blog, but frankly more people need to get their hands on it.

This is current “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah’s autobiography. He was born during the apartheid in South Africa and since his mom was black and his father was white, he should not have existed. He was a crime.

He talks about what it was actually like growing up in that time: the corruption of the police, poverty, church, faith, racism, feminism, equality and more.

You can read my in-depth review of the book here.

18299542This is totally different genre. Polar opposites. I studied a couple of his poems in high school and I found this book for free on amazon. I purchased it and I read it. I had zero expectations and I was so surprised of how much I enjoyed myself.

Weirdly enough, it holds a special place in my heart because it was the first collection of poetry I loved. I hated poetry in school. Like, really hated it.

I still find it stupidly complicated, but I am so happy I liked it.

Aziz Ansari Modern Romance - bookLet’s finish the post the way we started it: with a comedian.

I read Aziz’s book in summer 2016 and I adore it. I think about it to this day. It’s so funny and interesting! Aziz and Eric Klinenberg went around America and the world to conduct focus groups about finding romance and relationships. He talks about types of love, navigating the dating world in his modern age and the difficulties people encounter nowadays.

Also, Aziz’s obsession with food is featured a lot in the book and I love it. I learnt a lot from it and I’ll probably read it again in a not-so-distant future.

23301805Another genre! This time non-fiction!

I had heard a lot of people talking about this and I am so happy I listened to them. This book is so important.

It’s a fabulous introduction to feminism. The author talks about what is means to be a feminist in the 21st Century, about issues both in the US and in her native country Nigeria, problems women face everyday in today’s society and (sadly) more.

I absolutely loved it and it has made me want to expand my knowledge on feminist literature and I currently have a pretty big TBR list of books I’m interested it.

I recommend it to everyone. Both man and women. But especially men. They should educate themselves and learn what feminism truly is. Equality.

25883848This is probably the best romance book I’ve read.

I read it in two days, I truly couldn’t put it down. The story is about Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman, two co-workers at a publishing company that hate each other. When they are up for the same promotion, they start to realize that maybe they are not enemies after all. I know it sounds cheesy and corny, but it’s very good. I’ve recommended it so many people!

It’s such a fun and light-hearted rom-com. I definitely hope someone will buy the rights for the movie. It will be a guarantee success. It was one of the books I’ve read this year that made me fall back in love with reading.

I can’t wait to read Sally Thorne’s second novel!

Hope you enjoyed this post! Let me know what you think about these books (if you’ve read them).

I’d love to start a discussion.

August Favourites 2017

It’s been a busy month. I’ve been studying a lot and haven’t had time to actually HAVE favourite things. But there a few item that stood out. Actually more than I expected. 😉🤘🏼

TV shows

I’ve watched this show almost in one sitting. “Friends from College” is about a group of 40-year-old who have been friends since they were at Harvard together. The only problem is that there is a huge secret between them. Their relationships with each other are broken, weird, contorted and at times absurd.

The cast is really good. Cobie Smulders, Keegan-Michael Key, Annie Parisse, Fred Savage, Jae Suh Park and Nat Faxon.

I adored Key and seeing this, gave me further confirmation that he is an extraordinarily talented comedian.

I really enjoyed it. Nothing out of the ordinary, but if you are in the mood for some light-hearted comedy with serious topics, this is for you.

Pod Save AmericaSomething else I never though I’d enjoy: podcasts. But I got so much into american politics that I HAD to start following “Pod Save America”.

Former speech writers from the Obama Administration Jon Favreau and Jon Lovett and former National Security Council spokesperson Tommy Vietor teamed up and created this wonderful podcast. They post bi-weekly on Monday and Thursday and they tackle political news, clearly explaining everything so that even someone who doesn’t live in America (like me) can understand what the hell is going on.

They also bring specialists, former government officials and activists that are trying to improve their country and are advocating in favor of important causes.

Their company, “Crooked Media” also produces podcasts like “Pod Save the World”, “Lovett or leave it”, “Pod Save the People” and “With Friends like these”.

Every single episode is informative, educational and the promotional commercials are hilarious. Jon Lovett makes me double up with laughter every time they talk about their “Game Of Thrones” watch parties!!! I’ll definitely keep on listening.

Here you can find the podcast on iTunes and here are 3 interviews on Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah, Chelsea Handler‘s talk shows.

August 22nd 2017

My parent went away for three days with all our extended family. 9 of them on a three-day trip to Florence.

I didn’t go because of my stupid exams, but I had the best days. I did whatever I wanted. Literally. Sure, I studied for 2 out of 3 of the days, but let’s not talk about that. I slept so little! I wanted to make the most out of the freedom I had. I ate what I wanted, danced around in my underwear at midnight and felt so happy and free.

I have previously talked about this but having such a hands-on extended family with completely different interests than me is not easy. Soul crushing, to be exact.

Anyway, I spent an entire day with my closest friend, we mocked crappy TV serie, watched “Game of Thrones”, predicted who would win at the Emmys and laughed so much. I truly had the BEST DAY EVER with her. Total freedom of being who I am with no oppression and containment. I hadn’t felt that content and happy in a long time.

I’ve talked about “Suits” in my July favourites and in the Suits 7 Mid season review and I LOVE IT. I am so obsessed with it! I’ve started following some people just as obsessed with it as I am and it’s been amazing. Every time I scroll throw my timeline, there are so many pictures of Donna and Harvey.

Basically heaven.

I absolutely adore the show! It’s full with empowering and badass women (like Jessica) and cool and witty dialogue. At times cheesy, I can’t deny it. But my favourite thing is Harvey and Donna’s relationship. They are so close and have a fantastic friendship but on top of that: an amazing sexual chemistry.

THEY ARE MEANT TO BE TOGETHER. OK? THEY ARE. PERIOD. Please Aaron Korsch, let them get together. I really want them to. Every time they are on screen together, I get goosebumps.

Gabriel Macht and Sarah Rafferty are unbelievably good. I love them. And they’ve been friends for 20 years.

I have just realized there are no beauty items in this post… apparently I haven’t loved any particular product this month.

Let me know what you’ve been loving this months and if you are feeling down and want to rant, something you have hated!
