Book Review: Miracle on 5th Street by Sarah Morgan

THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THIS SHITTY BOOK. I shouldn’t even write this disclaimer because I would do you a favour by telling you the end.

This was so bad. Like, really really bad.
I joined a great book chick-lit club and up until this one, the books I’ve read were really good.

For example, they recommended Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine (an amazing and heartwarming story about a socially inadequate girl) and The Hating Game (a fantastic romance between two colleagues who are competing for the same promotion).
This, on the other hand, was completely horrible.

I hated everything about it. Literally every single thing.
It was sexist, full of stereotypes, the plot was ridiculous, the dialogues idiotic, the writing mediocre and filled with so many outdated tropes of the genre.

And it’s not over!

It’s about a girl (whose name I forgot) and obviously the man she falls in love with. In the span of a couple of weeks.

Because it’s something that happens. Here and on “The Bachelor” franchise.

The protagonist works for a party planning / event organizing company and she gets hired to decorate this guy’s house for Christmas.
She is the typical happy, bubbly, positive and christmas-loving girl and he is a thriller novelist who hates everything and everyone.
Somehow in the first 50 pages she mentions sex, having said sex and how she wants to have sex with him.

And of course he fantasizes about her! There is a line in the book and I swear on my sister, it goes: “The Kitten has claws”
NO. No. No. No.

Basically, Lucas’ grandmother (Lucas is the hunk whose apartment she is decorating) paid for Eva (the girl’s name finally came to mind!!) to make the house feel christmas-y so when he came back from his writing session in Vermont, he would find the surprise.
But he is not in Vermont, he is in his apartment! But the grandma paid for Eva to stay where and of course she HAS to finish her job so she stays there with him!
All of a sudden, inspiration strikes and he finds himself writing a novel based on this girl’s personality.

Then the grandmother is being a pimp and trying to pair them off, then there is some gala she RSVPs without his permission so they are forced to go to the ball, they sleep together, then some awkwardness, then some other shit happens.
We find out his dead wife was cheating on him so now he doesn’t believe in true love and she is really upset by this because of course she believes in it! Then they argue for some reason and then… HAPPY ENDING!
They’ll be together forever!

Other things that bothered me:
– his wife’s name is Sallyanne which reminds me of Kellyanne Conway, so that was a big NO from the start.
– Eva, the protagonist, is basically the SNL’s sketch with the brilliant Cecily Strong: the one dimentional female character from a male driven comedy. This sketch must have been based on Eva from this book.

I hated it from start to finish. I don’t know why I kept reading… maybe just to write this review and tear it to pieces.
Anyway, it’s horrible. Don’t read it. Do something better with your time.

Watch Brooklyn Nine Nine.

Homeland season 7 PREMIERE – Review

SPOILER ALERT! This blog post contains spoilers for all seasons of Homeland.

Just like last year, I decided to put my thoughts on Homeland on paper and review the first episode of the show’s seventh season.

The Finale of season 6 left me devastated. I can’t believe how relevant and pertinent the show still is.

Season 6 dealt with a new president elect (A WOMAN!!! But don’t rejoy because she’s the worst), fake news, an Alex Jones’ radio host, friction with the intelligence community, islamophobia and sadly so much more.

Season 6 was painfully realistic. It resembled closely (maybe too much) the political and social landscape of today’s America. President Elect Keane’s deligimization of the intel community and other sectors of the US government.

Doesn’t that remind you of anyone? Maybe residing in the White House right in this moment.

I thought so.

Even though they shot and wrote the show before the back shit crazy events occurred (The Delegitimisation of the FBI and the intelligence community by the sitting US president, The war against reality truth and facts, and so much more), “Homeland“ pains very much divided nation, people on opposite sides fighting each other and believes that seem to come from another historical Era.
It has always been politically relevant and I’m so curious to see what they going to do with this seventh season.

In the aftermath of President Keane‘s election and wave of arrests she ordered against her own intelligence community, people are trying to navigate on which side they want to stand.

On a more personal note, Carrie is also dealing with the tragic loss she had at the end of season six (I will not talk about it because it upsets me too much), her living situation with her sister and her husband, and of course her medical condition.

On the show, the fight isn’t between Republicans and Democrats. In our reality, it is quite

clear where people stand and what they think about the events of the last year. On the show, the lines are blurred. On one side you have a president who locked up her own federal agents and is not trusted by more than half of the country. One the other side you have people fighting against her, but what they preach isn’t exactly better than what she believes in.

O’Keefe, who is the counterpart of right-wing radio show host Alex Jones, and his views increase the distrust among the American people. Him and his followers are saying to be part of “The Resistance”, just like the term the Democrats are using to fight against Trump.

So where is the parallel? Is there one?

To be perfectly candid it’s kind of hard for me to fully understand what goes on homeland, just like with “HouseOfCards”. It’s not easy to follow, especially now that’s all about political power.

And I have a couple of criticisms. Although putting a woman in the White House, as president, after the events of last years presidential election, felt like a good idea I’m now having doubts.
Hillary Clinton Was president now, maybe having a fictional and ambiguously suspicious counterpart would’ve been a good idea, but I’m afraid that showing a flawed and unprepared female president could deter people from electing one. It’s probably my naive point of you, and I am almost sure this won’t impact the publics opinion, but personally I wouldn’t have risked it.

Nonetheless I am ecstatic that “Homeland” is back. I am already planning to rewatch season four (which is probably my favourite season EVER).

I genuinely hope that you will enjoy this season and feel free to let me know your thoughts on the premiere and on the second episode.

September 2017 TV Premiere – Opinions

I’m a bit late with this… I haven’t been particularly present on the blog community recently. I’ve had two great month and I was busy actually living my life.

But I enjoy writing about TV and I want to catch up on all the reviews I didn’t do and the beauty hauls I haven’t put together. (I did take the pictures. Now I’m missing the names of the product and I can’t seem to be able to get up, get the makeup and write the names down. I’m lazy.)

Anyway, these past two months have been amazing for Tv! So many great shows and so many old obsession making a comeback!

Let’s get into it!

  • Victoria ITV Jenna ColemanVICTORIA (ITV)

I absolutely loved this second season, great moments between the Queen and Prince Albert, great storylines involving feminism, a woman in power, loss, grief, medicine, inventions and more.

I really liked season 1, but I think I’ve enjoyed season 2 more. This year, we already knew the characters and the climate of the Victorian age, but they kicked it up a notch. The famine in Ireland and the trip to France deeply explore the terrible issues of the era.

On top of that, they dealt with homosexuality and the secrecy of it. The show experimented with different directorial choices and I truly appreciated it.

On top of that, Lord M broke Britain’s heart and the show’s viewers will never forget it.

  • You're the worst poster s4YOU’RE THE WORST (FXX)

I adore this show. I know it may seem bad, but it shows the inner me. The side that is wild, with no filters and restrictions. Although I am truly sad about Jimmy and Gretchen’s break up, it’s still funny seeing them navigate the world as single people again.

To be honest, the show isn’t as good as its first and second seasons. As I’m writing this, there are only 3 episodes left before the finale. Having said that, I feel like this season has been a little bit stuck. The characters haven’t evolved that much and it seems like the show is piling on as much crazy shit as they possibly can. Without really going forward.

Still, if they don’t re-new it for a 5th season, I will be sending FXX a series of angry and profanity-filled emails.

  • Better Things FX PosterBETTER THINGS (FX)

Even though I feel that they made it as absurd and as weird as they could, this show has some amazing gems.

The episodes are centred on Sam, her three daughters and the crazy things that life throws at them. It’s very explicit and the daughters treat their mother to an attitude that I would never allow. Not to me and not to everybody else. They are so disrespectful! I have the urge of slapping them in the face.

But just like in “You’re The Worst”, Sam isn’t afraid of other people’s opinions and her angry rants about sexuality and feminism are GREAT!

There are amazing monologues and Pamela Adlon is a fantastic actress. It’s quite explicit and raw but I’m really excited to see the last two episodes!

Also, on Oct. 19th, they announced they have renewed “Better Things” for a 3rd season!!! YAY!!

  • Brooklyn nine nine s5 poster.jpgBROOKLYN NINE NINE (FOX)

I will write this entire section mostly in all-caps because it’s been my obsession, I’m so excited and I love it so much.

I got my closest friend hooked on this show and we legitimately spent an entire day watching episodes together. Not even joking. Best day ever.

This 5th season has been incredible. So funny and full of spectacular character developments. Especially Jake.

The Halloween episode is probably one of the best episodes of a comedy show that I’ve seen in a long time. In every season there is a Halloween episode that is centred about a heist that will determine who, in the precinct, is the “Ultimate Detective / Genius”.

It’s so rare that a show in its 5th season is still going strong, but Brooklyn Nine Nine never disappoints.

  • this is us season 2 posterTHIS IS US (NBC)

I reviewed the first episode of this second season at length, so I’m not going to say too much about it here.

The show is still great, the characters are so well-written and although there hasn’t been that much crying on my part, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Nonetheless, there are still some things that piss me off and clichés I wish they hadn’t done, but I’ll keep watching. There is no doubt in that.

  • modern-family-s9 2.jpgMODERN FAMILY (ABC)

What can I say about this show: it’s a staple, it’s iconic. A classic.

The show is still great, the dynamics between the characters still relevant. What more can I say other than “I love you, Modern Family.”?

  • Grey's anatomy PosterGREY’S ANATOMY (ABC)

Ehm… Well… I’m not a person that likes pointing out the negative things but this one deserves it.

WHAT ARE THEY DOING?!?! What are these absurd storylines? Come on!!!! From Owen’s sister randomly being alive, to Amelia’s stupid stupid stupid tumor and to Maggie and Jackson having a thing, I really don’t know how the show is still on air.

I took it to Twitter while watching one of the episodes from this season and I noticed that I hadn’t tweeted positive things about the latest Grey’s Anatomy episode since 2014. That’s sad.

One things after another, they demolished the show. Thankfully, they didn’t damage too much Meredith’s character, otherwise I won’t be here talking about it.

I’ll probably keep watching every once in a while, when I’m in the mood for a soap opera with doctors.

I’ve recently watched the 300th episode and although a bit mismatched, they paid tribute to all the major characters that have left the show and I loved it. Also, Jackson’s speech made m tear up.

  • will and grace.jpgWILL AND GRACE (NBC)

I was super shocked because I didn’t think a show like “Will and Grace” was going to be so political.

Right from the first episode, they throw joke after joke (mostly insult after insult) towards Donald Trump and the current administration! I loved it! The fidget spinner and russian dictionary joke in episode one is one of my favourites!! And let’s talk about the hat with “Make America Gay Again”!! Absolutely adored it!

In just 6 episodes, they talked multiple times about the current political climate in America, the struggles of being openly gay in the country, the appreciation young people need to have in regards of those who fought for their rights and how stupid conversion camps are. Speaking of which, the Mike Pence portrait in the background literally made my day. SO FUNNY!!!

I truly appreciate when a show explains and takes time to explore such subjects. Tv is also meant to be educational and I believe “Will and Grace” is doing it right.

Even if it started really well with guest host Ryan Gosling, the following hosts haven’t been that impressive (aside from Kumail Nanjiani, obvs).

The political commentary is still very much relevant, but I feel like they have hit a bit of a rough spot in these past weeks. I hope it’ll get better.

I’ll keep watching, especially the parts with the amazing Kate McKinnon, Pete Davison, Leslie Jones and obviously Weekend Update.

That’s it from me! At least for today! Hope you liked it and let me know your thoughts on any of the shows I’ve mentioned: I’d love to hear your opinions.

October 2017 Fall Premiere

In a couple of days it will be October and this can only mean one thing: another round of amazing tv show premieres.

And this months is just as good as September. I am still so upset that in the last post I forgot to add BBC’s “Doctor Foster”. I saw it trending on the date of its release (September 5th) and I didn’t know it was coming back for a second season so early. I was truly devastated.

This month 7 shows come back and I cannot wait.

Without much further ado, let’s get into it!

October 3rd: BLACK-ISH

I started watching this comedy this year, despite it being in its 3rd season. I enjoy it. I love that they talk about social issues in an accessible was to everyone. Season 3 episode 12 is probably the best. It’s about the aftermath of Donald Trump’s election. So incredible. Highly recommend it.

Anyway, it’s about a black familiy living in California and dealing with everyday life. Dre and Bow live with their 4 children and Dre’s parents. Who are completely crazy. Last season ended with Bow having their 5th child and I am really looking forward to see what’s going to happen to the Johnson’s next.

What I like about it, is not really the comedy. I don’t find it that funny, but it’s a show that helps white people understand black culture and at the same time, it portrays the normal black family living, with some of the same issues as everybody else.

What compelled me to go on with it, was the social component. They talk about race, sexism, education, culture and also a lot of stupid thing. If you are interested in a light-hearted comedy that you can watch while you do laundry (like I do), I definitely recommend it.

Tuesdays at 9/8c on ABC

October 5th: SCANDAL

Scandal PosterAnother ABC show! This time produced and created by… Shonda Rhimes! The Queen of ABC dramas! This 7th will be Scandal’s last season and I haven’t watched it since season 5. Frankly, I don’t remember anything past season 3.

At one point it got too ridiculous, like Grey’s Anatomy. But with Grey’s, I am loyal to it. I liked Scandal. I bingewatched it while I was sick a couple of years ago but then I was interested in other things and I let go of it.

I might catch up on it or watch it “Bones Style”, watching the first episode of the season, the cliffhanger one in the middle and then the last 3 of the season. With this method you will have an overall knowledge of what happened. Who gives a shit about the rest.

(P.S. My app says I’m missing 28 episodes. I though they were more, so not too bad.)

Thursdays at 9/8C on ABC

October 11th: MR ROBOT

Mr Robot PosterThis show is crazy. So incredibly well made! Last season it left us all hanging, not knowing what was going to happen to Elliot and Mr Robot.

What I love most about the show is the directing. The subject in the frame is always off-centred. It gives a mysterious and documentary-like vibe and I adore it.

And can we PLEASE talk about Rami Malek? He is adorable and super talented. His performance is brilliant. Absolutely magnificent.

A warning, if you watch it and don’t understand anything, don’t worry. Nobody does. I recommended it to my cousing and he was so confused by it.

Nonetheless, it is a beautifully crafted series, another incredibly product of USA Network and I adore it.

Wednesdays at 10/9c on USA Network

My friend recommended this show to me a couple of months ago. I had had it in my “to watch” list since season 1, but I had forgoten about it.

This show is the best. It’s like an amazingly well-done parody of a spanish telenovela. Absolutely spectacular. The show is about Jane, a young aspiring writer who gets artificially inseminated. But as the title suggests, she is a virgin.

Risultati immagini per jane the virgin rafael

Her baby daddy? Handsome hotel owner Rafael. *wink wink*

The show is one absurdity after the other. Completely crazy. Visions, dreams, twin siblings, secret mothers, a drug lord, telenovelas, crazy fathers, evil stepmothers and more. It’s crazy. And I love it. I can’t wait to see what season 4 has in store for us!

Fridays at 9/8c on THE CW

I buddy-watched this show with my best friend and it was ridiculous. It wasn’t really my cup of tea at the beginning but I was so curious to see what was going to happen that in the end I really liked it.

It’s like a mix between Doctor Who and Sherlock. Dirk Gently is a reeeeeeeaaaaaally weird bloke who solves “holistic” crimes. He meets Todd Brotzman and he quickly becomes his reluctant and skeptical assistant. There is a psychopath, a girl who barks, an adorable corgi, time travel and an absurd friendship between a girl who kills everyone she meets and an electrician she decided to kidnap.

Completely mental. It’s a collaboration between the BBC and Netflix. Starring Samuel Barnett as Dirk and Elijah Wood as Todd, the show is utterly crazy. And incredibly funny. Can’t wait for the absurdity of season 2!

Saturdays at 9PM on BBC America

Good Behavior PosterThis is probably the show I am most excited about. I discovered this serie last year, shortly after it came out.

Good Behavior is about Letty, a thief with a lot of drug and alcohol problems who has a dangerous encounter with a hit man named Javier. This show is so good. Really really good. I was obsessed with it last year. I watched it twice. consecutively. I wrote an unbelievably long review gushing about how much I love it.

I saw the trailer for this next instalment and it was INCREDIBLE. Michelle Dockery and Juan Diego Botto have an explosive chemistry. This is probably one of the best shows I’ve seen in 2016. And if you follow this blog, you know I watch A LOT of TV.

I highly recommend it. It’s sexy, full of passion, anger, issues but also recovery and survival. I have been wanting to watch it again for quite some time.

Sundays at 9/8c on TNT

Mine is quite an unpopular opinion, but I wasn’t a huge fan of Stranger Things. Sure, very well constructed and acted, but not something I could really really like.

My sister watched it the other day and really really liked it. Even though I wasn’t sure it would be something she would enjoy. Weird…

Anyway, to me it was overhyped. It’s a good show, don’t get me wrong. I love the details about the old horror movies from the 80s, the music, the clothes and some of the plot. But it’s too sci-fi. (says the girl who watches Doctor Who). But it is! I finished it because I wanted to see what was going to happen. That’s it.

The kid’s performances are magnificent. It’s probably worth watching for them.

I’ll be seeing it with my sister, probably.

October 27th on Netflix.

I hope you found some new show to watch! Let me know which one of your shows are coming back! I’d love to discover new series!
