70th Primetime Emmy Awards – Commentary, Reactions and Best Dressed

The Emmys happened this morning! From midnight to 5AM I was glued to the screen, watching the Red Carpet and then the actual ceremony.

Hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che, I liked the show. It was quick, efficient but… kinda boring?

It was a bit bland and there was very little tension! They announced the categories so quickly that I couldn’t even work up any sort of suspense. And having the narrator (??) / voice-of-God person read the nominees’ names might have saved time, but it felt too rushed. Moreover, they took unnecessary breaks between less important categories rather than the ones people are notoriously interested in.

The banter between the presenters was as awkward as always with the exception of Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg, obviously. He is adorable, nothing he does is ever not entertaining.

Betty White is obviously an american treasure but bringing her on stage felt unnecessary. I get that she is so important but that poor woman is 96. Leave her at home. Don’t parade her around.

And as much as I love Maya Rudolf and Fred Armisen, their segments fell so incredibly flat. It was not funny.

I won’t even talk about the proposal because I was so embarrassed and I hated it so much. Like, so much. I would have run out of the theatre screaming in horror. I hated it. But congratulations, I guess…

Not unto the part that left me angry and disappointed.

They bragged about how diverse the nominees were and yet,

22 out of the 26 awards given out were won by white people.

Only 4 non-white people won.

How is that possible?

The irony is that at the beginning they did this great opening with a diverse cast singing about how diverse they were. And then they didn’t awarded any Emmys to said diverse group of people.

p.s. they should have let Kate McKinnon host. She is the best. And also a woman.

Atlanta didn’t win anything, which is a disgrace. Atlanta’s “Teddy Perkins” deserved the award for Outstanding Directing. And Matthew Rhys as best lead actor? Sterling K Brown was in his same category. Sterling.

I also have bone to pick with the outstanding leading actress in a drama. I want to say that I LOOOOOVE Claire Foy and her performance was magnificent but they overlooked Sandra Oh and Elisabeth Moss. If it were up to me, it would not have gone to Claire.

And the supporting actor in a drama series? Peter Dinklage? He is always brilliant but this season did not shine a light on him and it was a little bit weak.

Thandie Newton was amazing in Westworld. She was truly magnificent but I can’t help but feeling Yvonne Strahovski was robbed.

And the awkwardness in the outstanding variety talk series when people started chanting Stephen Colbert‘s name and John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight won? YIKES! I love them both but I think I might have wanted The Late Show to win.

Now I want to gush about two people I was so proud and thrilled they won:

Bill Hader for Outstanding Lead Actor in a comedy and John Mulaney for Outstanding Writing in a Variety Special.

I’m so proud of them.

Before showing you the selection of dresses I fell in love with, a special shout out to shows like “RuPaul Drag Race” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” for bringing parts of the LBGT+ community to the screen.

I’ll say it again… Atlanta was robbed. And sure, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel was fantastic but cool it. A few of those awards were questionable.

70th Primetime Emmy Awards: Comedy (Supporting Actors, Lead Actors & Outstanding Series)

And last but not least…. Comedy! Supporting Actors and Actresses, Lead Actors and Actresses and Outstanding series!

Check out all my other opinions:

Now let’s go!

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series

2018-09-03 (6).png

What a great group of ladies!!!

Aside from Laurie Metcalf, I’m very familiar with all these performances and they’re great!

Let me start by saying I don’t understand Glow. I like it but I don’t get it. Alex Bornstein was amazing on The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Megan Mullally is a legend.

The three SNL ladies are brilliant but my pick is Kate.

Kate McKinnon had a fantastic season on SNL and she can literally play any person. She has no limitation.

2017 Winner: Kate McKinnon, SNL

My Winner: Kate McKinnon, SNL

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series

2018-09-03 (7).png

I don’t know Louie Anderson and I don’t even know Baskets. Sorry.

But I do know the other actors and their performances!

Alec Baldwin’s Trump impersonation has become iconic and, speaking of SNL, YAY Kenan Thompson! His first nomination!

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s season 4 is mind-blowing! So good! Tituss Burgess’ performance was so funny! I loved him! Brian Tyree Henry was also unbelievable on Atlanta‘s “Barbershop”! It was so funny!

I can’t decide between Henry Winkler and Tony Shalhoub. They were so unique on their own show and they were both amazing.

I just can’t…

Also, where is Andre Braugher? Where is his nomination? He needs it. He deserves it.

on top of that… WHAT ABOUT ZACH WOODS? He killed it as Jared Dunn! I’m so pissed about this.

2017 Winner: Alec Baldwin, SNL

My Winner: Henry Winkler / Tony Shalhoub

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

Lead actress in comedy.png

I don’t get “Moms” and I don’t get “Grace and Frankie”. Sorry Allison Janney and Lily Tomlin. I’m just putting it out there.

I loved Pamela Adlon on Better Things. The show is great, so different and a comedy but not really. It deals with intense things.

Tracee Ellis Ross. I love her. I love her. So much. She is such an interesting person and her portrayal of Dr. Bow Johnson was so good. I need to mention the post-partum depression episode. She was magnificent.

My pick for the Emmy has to be Rachel Brosnahan. I fell in love with her and “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel”. She was incredible on the show and she deserves it.

2017 Winner: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

My Winner: Rachel Brosnahan, “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel”

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Serieslead actor in comedy.png

I do not watch Shameless (yet) and I don’t like Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. I don’t want a Bernie Sander’s lookalike to yell at me for 30 minutes.

And now it gets tough. Anthony Anderson has been amazing as Dre Johnson but I feel like we need to concentrate on Donald, Bill and Ted.

Season 2 of Altanta was so weird, so strange and so amazing. Ted Danson as Michael on The Good Place was iconic and he gave such a terrific performance.

And Bill Hader. Wow. Barry sounds like it shouldn’t work but it super does. It’s genius.

2017 Winner: Donald Glover, Altanta

My Winner: Bill Hader / Ted Danson (Sorry Donald).

Outstanding Comedy Series

comedy series.png

I don’t get Curb Your Enthusiasm and Glow. I will watch season 2 of Glow but I think it is not for me.

Now, how can I choose between these? Silicon Valley was hilarious and Blackish talked about so many important and socially relevent topics.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was so incredibly funny this season! I was not that into it in the past but WOW!

Atlanta killed it. It was so weird and so innovative. So NEW.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise quite dark comedy environment. It was so bright, fun and hilarious.

And now onto Barry. A show about a sniper who wants to become an actor. How can it work?, you ask. It can, it does and it’s magnificent.

2017 Winner: Veep (HBO)

My Winner: The Marvelous Mrs Maisel / Barry

That’s it!

Here are all my lenght-y and rant-y opinions about the Emmys!

Tune in Monday, September 17th at 8 ET / 5 PT on NBC! Hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che!

75th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2018 – TV NOMINATIONS

I’m ashamed. I was so in my own world that I almost forgot about television. I literally forgot the Golden Globes where on tomorrow. I didn’t even know who was hosting! (the lovely Seth Meyers!) and I haven’t written a lot about television in this past months. But I’m here!

FYI, if you’re as clueless as me, the Golden Globes air tomorrow January 7th on NBC at 5:00 p.m. PST / 8:00 p.m. EST.

I haven’t seen any (or almost any) of the movies that are nominated so I’m going to entirely skip that section. I’ll, of course, be concentrating on TV.To be fair, there are a lot of shows I haven’t seen yet. Mostly due to the studying, the busy holidays, overall lack of time and… oh yeah! I forgot about the existence of the awards! At least last year I remembered that the nominations were being announced!

Anyway, I’ll be showing the categories and guess which one will win! Just like the Emmys in 2016!

Also, can we just say it? These Globes are hella white! Very little diversity here… I’m kind of disappointed.

Without much further ado, let’s dive into it!

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

supp role lim TV actress.PNG

At least in this category I’ve seen everything except Michelle’s Pfeiffer performance. Frankly, seeing how the Emmys went, it’s probable that Anne Dowd will win.

I’d also like both Chrissy Metz and Shailene Woodley to win because their performances was really good and unexpected, especially in Shailene’s case.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

supp role lim TV actor .PNGI loved Alexander Skargard’s performance in Big Little Lies. He was truly excellent. However much I like David Harbour and Christian Slater on their respective shows, I think it should go to Skargard.

Haven’t seen Fargo and I stopped watching Feud after the second episode.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy

actress comedy.PNG

I recently saw Rachel Brosnahan’s performance in The Marvellous Mrs Maisel and I ADORE her! I didn’t even recognize her! She was the prostitute Doug was obsessed with on “House of Cards”!

“Better Things” this year was really good. Some episodes were so inspiring and fun, while others were a little bit meh. I’m not familiar with the other shows… “Glow” is in my watch list, as well as Insecure. I HAVE TO WATCH THEM!!!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy

actor comedy.PNG

How can I decide between Aziz, Eric McCormack and Anthony Anderson? (I haven’t seen the other two).

Frankly, I’d go with Aziz. Season 2 of Master of None was amazing. I absolutely loved it. Although Black-ish themes and social issues are so important and Will and Grace has been sooooo political! I’ll still laughing about that Mike Pence portrait at the conversion camp in episode 4. AMAZING.

I can’t choose. I just… I can’t.

Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series – Drama

actress drama.PNG

Claire Foy.

The other actresses are probably amazing but aside from Katherine Langford and Elizabeth Moss, I haven’t seen the other women’s performance.

So… Claire Foy.

Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series – Drama

actor drama.PNG

Sterling K Brown.

No questions. No Doubts.

(and because I haven’t seen the other shows. Like… none of them)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

lim tv actress.PNG

Nicole Kidman

The only one I haven’t seen was “The Sinner” but Kidman’s performance was PERFECT. She was so good. But she won at the Emmys, so maybe they’ll decide to give the award to somebody else. I don’t know. For me, it’s Nicole.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

lim tv actor.PNG

No idea.

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

lim tv.PNG

No idea.

Personally I’d go for Big Little Lies, since it’s the only one that I finished watching.

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy

This is impossible. How can I choose?! I haven’t seen SMILF but even without taking it into consideration, it’s impossible.

For the quality, I’d say The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. For the cinematography, Master of None. For the political commentary, Will and Grace and Black-ish. For laugh out loud comedy, Will and Grace. For social issues, Master of None and Black-ish and Will and Grace.

So… I can’t.

Best Television Series – Drama

best tv drama.PNG

Game Of Thrones was explosive this season. And not because of the plot (which was a bit meh). Stranger Things 2 left us TV lovers talking about it for AGES. This is Us was great. (It got too cheesy for my taste. I’ll still watch part B of season 2, but there are things that bothered me) and The Crown was sooooooooo fantastic! The Handmaid’s Tale gave us a social and political commentary that is unbelievably relevant.

I can’t decide. I’d be happy either way. (Well, not really if This Is Us wins. Sorry, I love the show so much but it’s not on the same level as the other ones)

Can’t wait for Sunday! I’ll be up all night watching it! Let me know what you think about the nominations and who you think is going to win.

Have a wonderful day and Happy Golden Globes night!
