70th Primetime Emmy Awards – Commentary, Reactions and Best Dressed

The Emmys happened this morning! From midnight to 5AM I was glued to the screen, watching the Red Carpet and then the actual ceremony.

emmys-2018-review

Hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che, I liked the show. It was quick, efficient but… kinda boring?

It was a bit bland and there was very little tension! They announced the categories so quickly that I couldn’t even work up any sort of suspense. And having the narrator (??) / voice-of-God person read the nominees’ names might have saved time, but it felt too rushed. Moreover, they took unnecessary breaks between less important categories rather than the ones people are notoriously interested in.

The banter between the presenters was as awkward as always with the exception of Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg, obviously. He is adorable, nothing he does is ever not entertaining.

Betty White is obviously an american treasure but bringing her on stage felt unnecessary. I get that she is so important but that poor woman is 96. Leave her at home. Don’t parade her around.

And as much as I love Maya Rudolf and Fred Armisen, their segments fell so incredibly flat. It was not funny.

I won’t even talk about the proposal because I was so embarrassed and I hated it so much. Like, so much. I would have run out of the theatre screaming in horror. I hated it. But congratulations, I guess…

Not unto the part that left me angry and disappointed.

They bragged about how diverse the nominees were and yet,

22 out of the 26 awards given out were won by white people.

Only 4 non-white people won.

How is that possible?

The irony is that at the beginning they did this great opening with a diverse cast singing about how diverse they were. And then they didn’t awarded any Emmys to said diverse group of people.

WHAT?!

p.s. they should have let Kate McKinnon host. She is the best. And also a woman.

Atlanta didn’t win anything, which is a disgrace. Atlanta’s “Teddy Perkins” deserved the award for Outstanding Directing. And Matthew Rhys as best lead actor? Sterling K Brown was in his same category. Sterling.

I also have bone to pick with the outstanding leading actress in a drama. I want to say that I LOOOOOVE Claire Foy and her performance was magnificent but they overlooked Sandra Oh and Elisabeth Moss. If it were up to me, it would not have gone to Claire.

And the supporting actor in a drama series? Peter Dinklage? He is always brilliant but this season did not shine a light on him and it was a little bit weak.

Thandie Newton was amazing in Westworld. She was truly magnificent but I can’t help but feeling Yvonne Strahovski was robbed.

And the awkwardness in the outstanding variety talk series when people started chanting Stephen Colbert‘s name and John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight won? YIKES! I love them both but I think I might have wanted The Late Show to win.

Now I want to gush about two people I was so proud and thrilled they won:

Bill Hader for Outstanding Lead Actor in a comedy and John Mulaney for Outstanding Writing in a Variety Special.

I’m so proud of them.

Before showing you the selection of dresses I fell in love with, a special shout out to shows like “RuPaul Drag Race” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” for bringing parts of the LBGT+ community to the screen.

I’ll say it again… Atlanta was robbed. And sure, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel was fantastic but cool it. A few of those awards were questionable.

NOW UNTO THE FASHION!

The Night Of – First Impressions

I’ve been wanting to get to this show for quite some time but other thing came in the way.

HBO is famous for its heavy-themed and dark shows and this does not disappoint.

I knew very little about “The Night Of”, I didn’t know the actors and even the plot was unfamiliar to me. I think I saw a clip of it on Stephen Colbert’s late night talk show, but it didn’t catch my attention. I was more interested in the jokes about Donald Trump!

It stars Riz Ahmed and John Turturro. From what I have understood, his character has a wild night with a strange girl he just met and the morning after, he finds her murdered in her bed. He is questioned and brought in by the police, and the story unravels from this point on.

I have heard wonderful things about Riz Ahmed and the premisis of the show seems very interesting. Just from the pilot, it’s clear that he is wonderuful, his acting is incredible. Truly magnifient.

Moreover, I found this article on “The Hollywood Reporter” and it explains pretty well the opportunity to talk about issues like the criminal justice system and racism towards muslin communities. The article also says that the show has been a work-in-progress since 2009, when there was no muslim ban and no hate crimes like now.

For a pilot, it’s a bit long. Not just because it’s an hour and a half, but because it’s quite slow. Like, really really slow.

I’ve been thinking about what to write about this show for a long time and I reckon I’ve just came to the realization that “The Night Of” looks more like a documentary than a thriller, which is what you’d expect from the synopsis and the outlook of the serie.

There are a lot of shots of peomv5bmjqyotgxmdi0nl5bml5banbnxkftztgwote4mzczote-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_ple staring at things, mundane actions that were probably not necessary. This is probably what they wanted to show us, but they are dragging it on for a little bit too much, in my opinion. At the same time, if they hadn’t, it would not have been a truthful recount of the bureaucracy and awful problems of the criminal justice system.

Despite that, the show gets you totally hooked. Even if sometimes I found myself getting distracted, the show somehow finds its way into sucking you back it.

And this is what makes good television. It might not tick all the points in my list, but it is a very well-made show.

The main titles resembles a lot “True Detective”, “Westworld” and “The Crown”, the mismatched and out-of-focus images, the blue/grey/green-ish tone…

It is nominated for 10 Emmys including outstanding lead actor, outstanding supporting actor and for upstanding directing and writing.

I’ll probably write a quick post after finishing it with my complete thoughts on the show.

Let me know your opinion of the series! I’d love to know!

Big Little Lies – First Impression

I’ve just finished watching HBO’s “Big Little Lies” as part of my ongoing series of “shows I need to see before the Emmys” and I loved it.

Starring Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Reese Witherspoon, it’s based on the namesake book written by Liane Moriarty.

Before watching the pilot, I knew very little about it. Just that involves a murder mystery, a small town and the lives of these three women.

Madeline Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon) has two children, a part time job at the theatre comunity, an ex-husband who remarried. Her current huband is Ed (played by the lovely Adam Scott who has a majestic beard you won’t forget). She is chatty, very involved in the comunity and on the first day of school, she befriends a young women called Jane.

Jane Chapman is single mom who recently moved to town. She is young and completely different from all the other moms. We know very little about her and her past.

Celeste Wright is Madeline’s best friend. She has two twin boys and a younger husband. The relationship with said husband seems perfect, her marriage rock solid. But there is more than meets the eyes.

By the end of the episode, you see all three women getting ready to go to bed and the atmosphere shifts: while before you felt the mystery and the secrets, now all I perceived was sadness. Utter emptiness in Madeline, Jane and Celeste’s eyes.

I really like the writing and directing: the story is told in medias res, they start by introducing the women and their lives and in between that, the aftermath of the murder: the police describing the extend of the victim’s injuries and the interrogarions of some member of the community. All of this, without revealing the identity of the person who was murdered.

The first show that comes to mind where they have used this technique is “The Affair” (Showtime). And I really really like it. This one is even more particular, that is because it’s not the main characters who are interviewed, but merely bystanders.

I am hooked and I cannot wait to continue it. I have heard that some things are different than the book and some have said that it is not as good. I don’t really care. I’m just looking for amazing television.

There isn’t much else too say… It’s gripping, entertaining and it makes you want to bing watch it all in one day.

As soon as I finished it, I will let you know my overall opinions. Even though I am pretty sure I will like it. A lot.

Hope you liked this quick post. At least for my standards. 🙂

Let me know your thoughts about it and if you’ve read the book or see the show!

I’m so excited for the Emmys!!!
