70th Primetime Emmy Awards: Limited Series, Variety and Reality

I’m here and I’m ready.

Last year I was so unprepared! I watched the announcement of the nominations and then straight up forgot about the actual ceremony! But not this time!

I was at the beach and I had even written down my predictions (which were really spot on)!

Two years ago I divided my posts into programs, acting, supporting performances and writing and directing. But this year… It’s in genre category and colour coordinated!

And now let’s talking about Limited Series or Movies, Variety Shows and Reality Programs.

Outstanding Structured Reality Program

  • Antiques Roadshow (PBS)
  • Fixer Upper (HGTV)
  • Lip Sync Battle (Paramout Network)
  • Queer Eye (Netflix)
  • Shark Tank (ABC)

There is literally not doubt.

It’s an amazing show, I’ve cried a thousand times, I love it and it is the best.

2017 Winner: Shark Tank (ABC)

My Winner: Queer Eye (Netflix)

Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series

  • Full Frontal With Samantha Bee (TBS)
  • Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (HBO)
  • Late Night With Seth Meyers (NBC)
  • Saturday Night Live (NBC)
  • The Late Show With Stephen Colbert (CBS)

I can’t choose. I can’t.

I feel like I would betray the others. Although I don’t watch Sam Bee every single week (I can’t seem to remember to check her YouTube channel and I feel like I am being anti-feminist. SHE IS (ALMOST) THE ONLY WOMAN ON LATE NIGHT!!!), her program is so important. She talks about so many important issues!

And I watch Seth and Stephen everyday. Literally every morning. And John Oliver every week. I love them.

And SNL is legendary.

I just can’t. I can’t.

2017 Winner: Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (HBO)

My Winner: All of them.

Outstanding Variety Talk Series

Can I switch James Corden for Seth Meyers?

I really really like James! His show is really funny and the segments are hilarious. I get it, it is the only show that doesn’t talk that much about politics. (Along with Jimmy Fallon). But I feel like Seth has had an amazing year with segments like “Jokes Seth can’t Tell”, “Amber’s minute of fury” and “Amber says WHAT?!”.

I’m sad their efforts and their amazing show will not get recognised. Love you Seth!

That being said, I love Stephen. He is my favourite. I looooooove him.

We all know it’s basically granted John Oliver will win. He and his team deserve it so much.

I’m glad “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” got nominated because he has been doing so great and I feel like he has found his voice.

I love these people.

2017 Winner: Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (HBO)

My Winner: John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, Sam Bee, Trevor Noah and in my heart, Seth Meyers.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie

Lead actress in limited series.png

I heard Laura Dern was absolutely magnificent in it and even though I was not able to watch it before this post, I will definitely have to.

I know some of the actress and Sarah Paulson is always a guarantee.

2017 Winner: Nicole Kidman, “Big Little Lies”

My Winner: Laura Dern, “The Tale” (?)

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie

lead actor in liminted series.png

I’ve only seen Darren Criss and Jeff Daniel‘s performances and I have to say they were both brilliant.

I know that if John Legend wins the category, he will be one of the very few people who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Awad (EGOT). Lin-Manuel Miranda would have almost done it last year if his Moana song had won at the Oscars.

2017 Winner: Riz Ahmed, “The Night Of”

My Winner: Darren Criss, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace”

Outstanding Limited Series

limited series.png

I’ve only seen “The Alienist” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” so I can’t actually have a proper opinion on this category. I’ve heard Genius is fantastic.

I just haven’t had the time and the will power to watch it. The same with “Godless“. I’m so sick of the Old West environment. Westworld made me reject the entire genre.

2017 Winner: Big Little Liars (HBO)

My Winner: I don’t know.

Here we go! First batch of predictions/reflections are in!

I didn’t want to make these posts too long and I tend to ramble.

Follow me on Twitter and in the next couple of day, you will be able to vote in the polls and let me know who YOU think should win!

October 2017 Fall Premiere

In a couple of days it will be October and this can only mean one thing: another round of amazing tv show premieres.

And this months is just as good as September. I am still so upset that in the last post I forgot to add BBC’s “Doctor Foster”. I saw it trending on the date of its release (September 5th) and I didn’t know it was coming back for a second season so early. I was truly devastated.

This month 7 shows come back and I cannot wait.

Without much further ado, let’s get into it!

October 3rd: BLACK-ISH

I started watching this comedy this year, despite it being in its 3rd season. I enjoy it. I love that they talk about social issues in an accessible was to everyone. Season 3 episode 12 is probably the best. It’s about the aftermath of Donald Trump’s election. So incredible. Highly recommend it.

Anyway, it’s about a black familiy living in California and dealing with everyday life. Dre and Bow live with their 4 children and Dre’s parents. Who are completely crazy. Last season ended with Bow having their 5th child and I am really looking forward to see what’s going to happen to the Johnson’s next.

What I like about it, is not really the comedy. I don’t find it that funny, but it’s a show that helps white people understand black culture and at the same time, it portrays the normal black family living, with some of the same issues as everybody else.

What compelled me to go on with it, was the social component. They talk about race, sexism, education, culture and also a lot of stupid thing. If you are interested in a light-hearted comedy that you can watch while you do laundry (like I do), I definitely recommend it.

Tuesdays at 9/8c on ABC

October 5th: SCANDAL

Scandal PosterAnother ABC show! This time produced and created by… Shonda Rhimes! The Queen of ABC dramas! This 7th will be Scandal’s last season and I haven’t watched it since season 5. Frankly, I don’t remember anything past season 3.

At one point it got too ridiculous, like Grey’s Anatomy. But with Grey’s, I am loyal to it. I liked Scandal. I bingewatched it while I was sick a couple of years ago but then I was interested in other things and I let go of it.

I might catch up on it or watch it “Bones Style”, watching the first episode of the season, the cliffhanger one in the middle and then the last 3 of the season. With this method you will have an overall knowledge of what happened. Who gives a shit about the rest.

(P.S. My app says I’m missing 28 episodes. I though they were more, so not too bad.)

Thursdays at 9/8C on ABC

October 11th: MR ROBOT

Mr Robot PosterThis show is crazy. So incredibly well made! Last season it left us all hanging, not knowing what was going to happen to Elliot and Mr Robot.

What I love most about the show is the directing. The subject in the frame is always off-centred. It gives a mysterious and documentary-like vibe and I adore it.

And can we PLEASE talk about Rami Malek? He is adorable and super talented. His performance is brilliant. Absolutely magnificent.

A warning, if you watch it and don’t understand anything, don’t worry. Nobody does. I recommended it to my cousing and he was so confused by it.

Nonetheless, it is a beautifully crafted series, another incredibly product of USA Network and I adore it.

Wednesdays at 10/9c on USA Network

My friend recommended this show to me a couple of months ago. I had had it in my “to watch” list since season 1, but I had forgoten about it.

This show is the best. It’s like an amazingly well-done parody of a spanish telenovela. Absolutely spectacular. The show is about Jane, a young aspiring writer who gets artificially inseminated. But as the title suggests, she is a virgin.

Risultati immagini per jane the virgin rafael

Her baby daddy? Handsome hotel owner Rafael. *wink wink*

The show is one absurdity after the other. Completely crazy. Visions, dreams, twin siblings, secret mothers, a drug lord, telenovelas, crazy fathers, evil stepmothers and more. It’s crazy. And I love it. I can’t wait to see what season 4 has in store for us!

Fridays at 9/8c on THE CW

I buddy-watched this show with my best friend and it was ridiculous. It wasn’t really my cup of tea at the beginning but I was so curious to see what was going to happen that in the end I really liked it.

It’s like a mix between Doctor Who and Sherlock. Dirk Gently is a reeeeeeeaaaaaally weird bloke who solves “holistic” crimes. He meets Todd Brotzman and he quickly becomes his reluctant and skeptical assistant. There is a psychopath, a girl who barks, an adorable corgi, time travel and an absurd friendship between a girl who kills everyone she meets and an electrician she decided to kidnap.

Completely mental. It’s a collaboration between the BBC and Netflix. Starring Samuel Barnett as Dirk and Elijah Wood as Todd, the show is utterly crazy. And incredibly funny. Can’t wait for the absurdity of season 2!

Saturdays at 9PM on BBC America

Good Behavior PosterThis is probably the show I am most excited about. I discovered this serie last year, shortly after it came out.

Good Behavior is about Letty, a thief with a lot of drug and alcohol problems who has a dangerous encounter with a hit man named Javier. This show is so good. Really really good. I was obsessed with it last year. I watched it twice. consecutively. I wrote an unbelievably long review gushing about how much I love it.

I saw the trailer for this next instalment and it was INCREDIBLE. Michelle Dockery and Juan Diego Botto have an explosive chemistry. This is probably one of the best shows I’ve seen in 2016. And if you follow this blog, you know I watch A LOT of TV.

I highly recommend it. It’s sexy, full of passion, anger, issues but also recovery and survival. I have been wanting to watch it again for quite some time.

Sundays at 9/8c on TNT

Mine is quite an unpopular opinion, but I wasn’t a huge fan of Stranger Things. Sure, very well constructed and acted, but not something I could really really like.

My sister watched it the other day and really really liked it. Even though I wasn’t sure it would be something she would enjoy. Weird…

Anyway, to me it was overhyped. It’s a good show, don’t get me wrong. I love the details about the old horror movies from the 80s, the music, the clothes and some of the plot. But it’s too sci-fi. (says the girl who watches Doctor Who). But it is! I finished it because I wanted to see what was going to happen. That’s it.

The kid’s performances are magnificent. It’s probably worth watching for them.

I’ll be seeing it with my sister, probably.

October 27th on Netflix.

I hope you found some new show to watch! Let me know which one of your shows are coming back! I’d love to discover new series!

Good Behavior

I’ve known about this show for a long time but I was so busy with other shows, tutoring, university and more.

I have browsed through a couple of TV shows broadcast on TNT and I wasn’t very impressed. I didn’t have high expectations. None at all.

mv5bmje4ntizndc1ov5bml5banbnxkftztgwmzmznzmwmdi-_v1_sy1000_cr006851000_al_“Good Behavior” is about a thief and con artist called Letty. She has just come out of prison and she is struggling to survive. But when she overhears a conversation between a hit man and his client, she finds herself in a dangerous situation. She begins a toxic and complicated relationship with Javier, the handsome trained killer. On top of that, she wants to regain custody of her son, now in the cares of her crazy mother.

THE SHOW IS SO ADDICTIVE! I loved the relationship between Letty and Javier! It’s the perfect passionate love story between two people who have both done horrible and horrific things. It’s intriguing, real and really sexy… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Starring my favorite English posh lady of the 1920s Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) and handsome Argentinian Juan Diego Botto, the show is gorgeous!

And what I love about it is that it’s not sugar coated. It’s raw, imperfect and weird. Letty’s problems with drugs, alcohol and a restraining order add up to her very sexually charged relationship with Javier.

I was also very surprised with the themes of the show, especially about the drinking, the drugs and the sex. There are a lot of sex scenes (of which I’m not really fond of. Not because I’m a prude, but hear me out: think about how embarrassing it must be to film those scenes! There are people watching them, cameras and… It makes me squirm so bad!)

Anyway, I want to talk about Javier… I REALLY like his character… even more than Letty. There was maybe a little bit too much crying from Dockery’s part (and I’m the one talking… I cry every 5 minutes), but I kind of get it. She is a recovering alcoholic (and she is not succeeding), had a drug abuse problem and she is also trying to be a mother for the child that she barely knows. Speaking of her adorable son, Jacob is the best. As a 10-year-old, he is very sharp and observant and probably knows too much about his mother’s messy affairs.

Also… Take a moment to look at Javier. ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜

He is a horrible human being, he killsmv5bzwnmytziogitytizys00nta1lwjjmdutnznlyjvkmjy2zgm1l2ltywdlxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvynjc5mjg0nju-_v1_sx1499_cr001499999_al_ people for a living. People pay him to kill whoever his client wants to get rid of. He is a murderer. But at the same time, he has principles, and an etiquette and there are lines that he won’t cross. He is a complex character, with a deep love for his estranged family and an adorable softer side. And did I mention that he is gorgeous? And has a psychotic and violent side? Let’s not forget about that.

Another couple of characters I really loved: Rob, Letty’s mother’s boyfriend. Imagine your typical Trump supporter? The not-so-bright uneducated ones? That’s him. And he is hilarious!

Also, FBI agent Rhonda Lashever was everything! I laughed so much whenever she was in a scene! LOVED HER!!! I definitely hope she’s going to be back for season 2! Oh yeah! TNT renewed it for a second season! Yay!

I was actually surprised by TNT. I’ve seen other TV shows from this network and in comparison they were crap. Sorry TNT, but I was NOT impressed.

And I have to admit that I also wasn’t impressed with “Good Behavior” at the beginning. I follow Michelle Dockery on Instagram and I knew about the show since she announced it on her account and I watch the trailer when it came out.

But I thought it was the same boring and “glossy” series in which they want to convince you that it’s serious, intense and HBO-worthy, but it’s really just a fake, over-dramatised and insufferable copy of high-quality show. And I was so glad I was wrong.

There are only two things that I wasn’t into: Michelle Dockery’s American accent and the music. Maybe it’s because I’ve only known her from Downton Abbey and heard her speak in a posh British accent for hours, but I didn’t really like. I could tell she was faking it. And it kind of bothered me. And the music… I thought it was well-suited for the tone of the show, but personally, I didn’t particularly like it. Too techno.

So counterbalance these slightly negative aspects, I’d like to mention my favourite episode: episode 7 “The Ballad of Little Santino.”. It was BRUTAL. I really loved it, but it was hard to watch.

It was just sooo real!

Lately, I’ve been noticing that fantasy is coming back as genre in TV and movies. And I’m not super thrilled about it. Well, I’m not happy at all. Really not happy. And it was so refreshing seeing something like this. I finished it in a week and I literally can’t wait to see the next season.

If you’re a fan of crime, complex and broken characters and a complicated relationship, this is the show for you.

I definitely recommend it and hope that you’ll let me know your thoughts if you’ve seen the show!

P.S. Did I mention the amount of wigs that there are in this show! Hilarious!
