Westworld Season 2 – Review

Spoiler alert: this review is going to be really short.

I watched it.

I did it.

It took me 4 months.

I did not understand what the fuck was happening.

Visually, it is beautiful. The landscapes, lens glares and colours are magnificent. It’s worth watching 10 hours of this season just to see the cinematography. It’s absolutely magnificent.

The acting is mesmerising. There were parts I couldn’t take my eyes off of the screeen, even though I did not get what was going on.

This is what I think I have internalised:

  • Dolores is now evil
  • Maeve can control other hosts
  • The humans/creators are collecting the data of all the guests (Facebook and Cambridge Analytica style).
  • Bernard is… a host? But not all the time? I don’t know I’m still confused
  • There are more than two timelines (?)
  • There are more universes than the Wild West one.
  • There is a sort of heaven.
  • Half the cast is dead.

Kudos to the actors, directors and the entire production team for creating a great show I do not understand in the slightest.

That’s my ony complaint. The show itself. It is really really hard to follow. Not even reading professional reviewers from The New York Times helped me.

I do not think I’ll be watching season 3 (probably airing in 2020). I can’t do this.

70th Primetime Emmy Awards: Drama (Supporting Actors, Lead Actors and Outstanding Series)

Even more drama!

Check out the other categories in the Drama section: Writing, Directing and Guest Actors! And the other categories!

70th Primetime Emmy Awards: Comedy (Writing, Directing and Guest Actors) and 70th Primetime Emmy Awards: Limited Series, Variety and Reality.

Now let’s talk about some dramas!

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series

2018-09-03 (3).png

Of course. Like I can decide a possible winner. Sure.

I’m not a huge fan of Millie Bobby Brown and even though Lena Headey was brilliant as usual, there are performances that impacted me more.

Ann Dowd was spectacular as always and Alexis Bledel made me feel so many emotions. This role was made for her and she gave it 110%.

I’m undecided between Yvonne Strahovski and Vanessa Kirby, but even though I am a little bit in love with Vanessa and Princess Margaret, I think the Emmy should go to Yvonne.

She was mesmerizing.

2017 Winner: Ann Down as Aunt Lydia, “The Handmaid’s Tale”

My Winner: Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy, “The Handmaid’s Tale”

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series

2018-09-03 (5).png

Another tough category. Wow.

I love the Game Of Thrones guys. I do. I have a crush on Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Mandy Patinkin is a treasure and I love him and David Harbour was unbelievable amazing as Jim Hopper.

I can’t decide between Matt Smith and Joseph Fiennes. I really want Matt to win. I think he deserves it so much but the other nominees are so amazing as well.

Out of loyalty I’m gonna go with Matt.

2017 Winner: John Lithgow as Winston Churchill, “The Crown”

My Winner: Matt Smith as Prince Philip, “The Crown”

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series

lead actress in drama.png

I’m not familiar with Tatiana Maslany and Keri Russell’s performances, to be fair.

Also, Sandra Oh is the first Asian-American woman to be nominated for an Emmy as Lead Actress. And she deserves it so much. Her performance in Killing Eve was perfect.

Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II was as brilliant as always and Elizabeth Moss literally tore my heart out of my chest. I can describe her performance as heartbreaking. She broke my heart.

I can’t really talk much about Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores because I was so concentrated on understanding the plot and I lost track of everything else.

2017 Winner: Elisabeth Moss as June / Offred, “The Handmaid’s Tale”

My Winner: I’m picking two winners because this is my blog so my rules: Elisabeth Moss as June / Offred, “The Handmaid’s Tale” and Sandra Oh as Eve Polastri, “Killing Eve”.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

lead actor in drama.png

So….. I was not that impressed by this category. For some reason, I thought this category would not include these people.

I don’t really know Jason Bateman and Matthew Rhys but I like all the other performances.

I can’t really decide. As I said before, I did not understand a single thing that happened on Westworld so, to sum up my choice is between Milo and Sterling.

I can’t choose. I don’t really have an opinion here. (surprise surprise. As you can see, I am very opinionated. And not just about TV).

2017 Winner: Sterling K Brown as Randall Pearson, “This is Us”

My Winner: Sterling K Brown or Jeffrey Wright (Sorry Milo).

Outstanding Drama Series

drama series.png

Well, well, well… The BIG category.

If I follow my instincts, my gut says “The Handmaid’s Tale”. Season 2 was heartbreaking and so intense.

But what about “The Crown”? And “Stranger Things 2”? That was so good! And so much better than season 1! Like, so much better. Even I watched it twice!

In these posts, I’m coming off as a non-Game of Thrones-fan. And I like the show… I’m jut so tired of it and there were some things I was no on board with. I’m tired of it. Thank God the next one is the last season.

This is Us broke my heart in a million pieces and it’s an amazing depiction of family life and deep issues every one of us faces in their lives.

Westworld is like… so well written, so well-directed and so well acted, but I don’t know what it is about and what it all means. It makes no sense.

I’m sure “The Americans” is amazing but I stopped at season 2. It was not for me.

Concluding, I don’t know. They are all Emmy worthy shows. I think I might be disappointed only if Westworld wins. Because I am so annoyed with it. Like, so annoyed.

2017 Winner: The Handmaid’s Tale

My Winner: every one but Westworld.

Here we are!

The Emmys are almost here! Remember to watch the ceremony on September 17th on NBC! Hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost.

WestWorld

I’ve heard a lot about this series on HBO. People have been talking about Westworld for ages, saying how wonderful and well-made it is.mv5bmteyodk5ntc2mjneqtjeqwpwz15bbwu4mdq5ntgwotkx-_v1_sy1000_cr006741000_al_

So naturally (although a few months later) I decided to give it a go. I didn’t know a lot about it, so I was pretty confused about the whole thing. And frankly, I still am.

IMDb says: “A series inspired by the 1973 film of the same title written by Michael Crichton about a futuristic theme park populated by artificial beings.”

It still doesn’t make sense! As I said, it’s on HBO so I expected nudity, nudity, curse words, violence and more nudity. And it’s there, don’t worry.

It has a great cast… Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Ed Harris, Anthony Hopkins and the third Hemsworth (Luke, who up until a few months ago didn’t even know existed. Sorry.)

The series is produced by J.J. Abrams. If you are a fan of sci-fi movies and tv series, you probably know him. He was involved in series like “Lost”, “Alias” and “Fringe” and of course the new “Star Wars” movie. Another familiar name, this time in the music department, is Ramin Djawadi, who also composes the soundtrack for “Game Of Thrones”. Definitely check it out, I usually listen to season 5 and 6 whenever I have to study. So dark and creepy.

mv5bm2viyzrlndetmwq5mc00ytmzlwi2ntyty2u2zdyzndvknznlxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvymjm4mte0nzq-_v1_
Anthony Hopkins (Shit, he is scary)

From what I have understood, the “WestWorld”is a theme parks masked as a real town with real people, who are actually artificial people. These people are only created to entertain the “guests” that come to the park. Naturally, the lab-created-people aren’t aware of  their origin.

And apparently the same day is repeated again and again. The only problem is that some robots (if you can call them that) are experiencing some glitches and malfunctions.

*spoiler alert for Game of Thrones*

Also, they Jon Snowed it. Characters keep coming back to life! It’s so weird!

jon-snow-lives-gae-of-thrones-seaosn-6-ftr

My first thoughts were:

  • “What am I watching?”
  • Is this a Black Mirror type of shit?
  • Why are there robot people in underground storage unit?
mv5bmjiwodm5otewmv5bml5banbnxkftztgwnzcxmjyynje-_v1_sy1000_sx1500_al_
James Marsden and Evan Rachel Wood

If you like the dystopian/futuristic/generally weird genre, this is definitely for you. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Sci-Fi… I am very picky about it. So yeah… It’s not my cup of tea. Anyway, it’s what I like to call “high quality TV”: great cast, director, music, storyline…

If someone has seen it, give me advice! Do you think I should keep watching?

Golden Globes 2017 – TV Nominations

I completely forgot the Golden Globes nomination were coming out on December 12th! I just opened Twitter and there they were!

In case you missed it, I talked about the nominations for the Emmys a couple of months ago and I LOVED doing it! So I’m here, writing this. I haven’t even looked at most of the nominees so this is my actual first impression!

You can read the complete list on Variety’s website.

The ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon and it will be transmitted on NBC on January 8th… So let’s dive into it!

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA

Wow, what a category. I literally can’t choose a winner. I am particularly happy because I have seen everything in this category (I’m on ep 1 of Westworld and a review will be coming up in the following weeks, but nevermind).

Let’s be frank: Game of Thrones had won a lot of prices so… Yeah, let’s give space to shows like The Crown and This is Us. They are new, incredibly well-made and at their first nomination.  This Is Us has made me feel things I didn’t even know I was capable of experiencing.

This might be an unpopular opinion but for me Stranger Things was over-hyped. I didn’t find it as good as people said it was. I was just: “Meh”.

LAST YEAR WINNER: MR. ROBOT

MY WINNER: This Is Us. (Sorry “The Crown”… If it were possible, I would award the globe to both the shows, but it’s not possible so…)

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

I haven’t seen “Atlanta” and “Black-ish”, but out of the left three, “Mozart in the Jungle”. Without. A. Single. Doubt.

I have just finished season 3 and it’s amazing. Absolutely perfectly made. Maybe even better than the other two… No, no, sorry: they are all beautiful.

I’m not a huge fan or Transparent or Veep, so…

MY WINNER: Mozart In The Jungle

LAST YEAR WINNER: Mozart in The Jungle

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA

  • RAMI MALEK – “Mr Robot”
  • BOB ODENKIRK – “Better Call Saul”
  • MATTHEW RHYS – “The Americans”
  • LIEV SCHREIBER – “Ray Donovan”
  • BILLY BOB THORNTON – “Goliath”

Just like at the Emmys, I haven’t seen “Ray Donovan”, “Goliath” and “Better Call Saul” (I haven’t even finished season 5 of Breaking Bad)

But out of the two I know, Rami Malek is my choice. I like Rhys, he’s a good actor, but I got bored with “The Americans” in season 2 and stopped watching, so…

MY WINNER: RAMI MALEK – “Mr Robot”

LAST YEAR WINNER: Jon Hamm – “Mad Men”

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA:

  • CAITRIONA BALFE – “Outlander”
  • CLAIRE FOY – “The Crown”
  • KERI RUSSEL – “The Americans”
  • WINONA RYDER – “Stranger Things”
  • EVAN RACHEL WOOD – “Westworld”

Luckily, “Outlander” is the only one I am not familiar with, so… yay.

Thinking about the performances of these actress, one that made an impact on me, as Claire Foy’s. Her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth is spectacular.

But Evan Rachel Wood was also very good. I feel like her role is not easy to portray: the emotions, the physical aspect, the repetitiveness…

Keri Russel and Winona Ryder are amazing actresses but my vote (as if I could actually cast it) goes to:

MY WINNER: CLAIRE FOY – “The Crown”

LAST YEAR WINNER: TARAJI P. HENSON – “Empire”

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN  TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY:

  • ANTHONY ANDERSON – “Black-ish”
  • GAEL GARCIA BERNAL – “Mozart in the Jungle”
  • DONALD GLOVER – “Atlanta”
  • NICK NOLTE – “Graves”
  • JEFFREY TAMBOR – “Transparent”

Sadly I am only familiar with Gael Garcia Bernal and Jeffrey Tambor’s work… And this is tough… They are both incredibly talented… But I’m staying loyal to the Maestro.

MY WINNER: GAEL GARCIA BERNAL – “Mozart in the Jungle”

LAST YEAR WINNER: GAEL GARCIA BERNAL – “Mozart in the Jungle”

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN  TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY:

  • RACHEL BLOOM – “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”
  • JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS – “Veep”
  • SARAH JESSICA PARKER – “Divorce”
  • ISSA RAE – “Insecure”
  • GINA RODRIGUEZ – “Jane The Virgin”
  • TRACEE ELLIS-ROSS – “Black-ish”

I have only seen “Veep”, but if the Emmy’s are of any indication, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is going to win again, so…

POSSIBLE WINNER: JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS – “Veep”

LAST YEAR WINNER: RACHEL BLOOM – “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”

BEST LIMITED SERIES:

  • AMERICAN CRIME
  • THE DRESSER
  • THE NIGHT MANAGER
  • THE NIGHT OF
  • THE PEOPLE VS O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY

Frankly I don’t have an opinion in this category. I have seen only “The Night Manager” (Yes, I haven’t seen O.J.! I am probably the only tv obsessed person who hasn’t seen it)

MY WINNER: I don’t care … sorry.

LAST YEAR WINNER: WOLF HALL

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION:

  • RIZ AHMED – “The Night Of”
  • BRYAN CRANSON – “All The Way”
  • TOM HIDDLESTON – “The Night Manager”
  • JOHN TURTURRO – “The Night Of”
  • COURTNEY B. VANCE – “The People VS O.J. Simpson: Amerian Crime Story”

I don’t have an opinion in this category either..

I love Bryan Cranston and he is an amazing actor and I’m sure he did an amazing job, bur having not seen “All the Way”, I can’t really judge.

Tom Hiddleston was also good on “The Night Manager”, but… I don’t know.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER: OSCAR ISAAC  “Show Me a Hero”

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION:

  • OLIVIA COLEMAN – “The Night Manager”
  • LENA HEADEY – “Game Of Thrones”
  • CHRISSY METZ – “This Is Us”
  • MANDY MOORE – “This Is Us”
  • KERRY WASHINGTON – “Confirmation”

Wow, what a group of extremely talented women! Frankly I LOVE them all.

The only series I haven’t seen is “Confirmation”, but as for Bryan Cranston, I trust Kerry, but I’m going to choose from what I know… But I DON’T know!

I can’t choose!!!! Both Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz are extraordinary of “This is Us”… truly legendary.

Lena Headey is just… come on… Queen Cersei. And I love her.

But how could I not choose Olivia Coleman?! She is just so good! She was amazing on “The Night Manager!”

MY WINNER: Don’t make me choose. Please. Don’t. Press Association, please give to these amazing ladies 5 Globes! Please.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER: LADY GAGA – “American Horror Story”

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE FOR TELEVISION:

  • FELICITY HUFFMAN – “American Crime”
  • RILEY KEOUGH – “The Girlfriend Experience”
  • SARAH PAULSON – “The People VS O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”
  • CHARLOTTE RAMPLING – “London Spy”
  • THANDIE NEWTON – “Westworld”

I am kind of angry I haven’t seen any on these except “Westworld”…

LAST YEAR’S WINNER: MAURA TIERNEY – “The Affair”

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE FOR TELEVISION:

  • STERLING K BROWN – “The People VS O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”
  • HUGH LAURIE – “The Night Manager”
  • JOHN LITHGOW – “The Crown”
  • CHRISTIAN SLATER – “Mr Robot”
  • JOHN TRAVOLTA – “The People VS O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”

At least in this category I know most actors.

Sterling K Brown also plays Randall on “This is us” and he is utterly brilliant. John Lithgow in “The Crown” is an amazing Winston Churchill. Great performance!

Christian Slater on Mr. Robot is very good and very disturbing at the same time. Half the time I’m watching, I am so scared of him. Literally terrified.

MY WINNER: I can’t decide!!! Shoot… John Lithgow? Christian Slater? Help. Please.

LAST YEARS WINNER: CHRISTIAN SLATER – “Mr Robot”

Hope you like this post! Let me know your opinion and who you think is going to win!
