People are finally noticing Peaky Blinders and it’s making me extremely happy.
Back in early 2017, my friend and I decided to buddy-watch a show and we landed on this one. And aren’t we glad we did?
Peaky Blinders is a dark and obscure drama about a mob family from Birmingham in 1919. They were known for having razor blades in their hats and their extreme cruelty. Although some people said the razors thing isn’t true, what is certain is their ruthlessness.
Cillian Murphy plays Thomas Shelby, the leader of the Peaky Blinders. A man who went to war in France and carries with him the horrors of that time. He is the leader of the Shelby clan, a family who terrorizes all of Birmingham and tries to become rich with their horse races scams.
What made me fall in love with the show was… well, everything. It’s perfect.
The accent, the location, the atmosphere, the actors, the storylines, I couldn’t have asked for a better drama to get obsessed with. I binged watched the first three seasons in the span of a couple of weeks. I was hooked.
They are not easygoing episodes, the dark and gloomy atmosphere is an intrisic part of the show: the muddy and smoked-filled streets, the constant cigarettes hanging from the characters’ lips and the thick dialect.
It’s a nearly perfect show, with the exception of season 3 which I found incredibly hard to get into, and what stands out to me the most, is the music.
It is so cool.
Those rock, metal powerful songs mixed with the slow-motion effect make up a super cool aesthetic. Even the theme song! It’s PERFECT.
The detail in which all the protagonists are described are OUTSTANDING. Don’t get me wrong: these are horrible, selfish people who still stop at nothing to get what they want. Each character is meticulously crafted to create deep and thought-out people.
It’s a joy to watch.
I am thrilled it’s coming back for a sixth season and, if it’s even half as good as season 5 (A MASTERPIECE), I know I will love it.
This post is YEARS in the making. I checked and it turns out I started writing it in April 2017 and to me, this is wild. Anyway, I’m glad I ended up writing it!
Let me know your thoughts on Peaky Blinders!
