Friends From College – Season 2 – REVIEW

Friends from College is back! A year and a half later, we get to see what has happened after the explosive season 1 finale.

Keegan-Michael Key and Billy Eichner have returned to my screen and I couldn’t be happier.

About season 1 I wrote:

The cast is really good. Cobie Smulders, Keegan-Michael Key, Annie Parisse, Fred Savage, Jae Suh Park and Nat Faxon. […]
I really enjoyed it. Nothing out of the ordinary, but if you are in the mood for some light-hearted comedy with serious topics, this is for you.

August Favourites 2017

Season 2 picks up a year after the events on the previous one. Max and Feliz are back together and they are getting married. All their friends get invited to the engagement party and shit goes down.

It’s super awkward.

They are forced to interact and this allows hilarious comedy moments to take place.

I have said this before and I will again: Keegan-Michael Key is a comedy God. He is absolutely wonderful. His presence on the screen is utterly captivating and, even in dramatic moments, his performance is phenomenal.

The music has been ON POINT the entire season! I love when music makes a show better.

Episode 2: “Storage Unit”

Cobie Smulders and Keegan-Michael Key are incredible in this episode. The juxtaposition of their chemistry and desynchronization plays beautifully on screen.

Episode 4: “The Bachelor Party”

I loved the mix of Wannat’s “Cherry Pie” and the shots of the trash on the beach inserted between the events of the AWFUL bachelor party in Atlantic City that gets organized for Max.

It was so funny and true to the horrible night they are having. And it turns out, despite how crappy the city is, they end up having a lot of fun.

Episode 6:

The scene at the funeral was absolutely hilarious and out of this world: the sponsor itself, the YouTube live stream, the sponsorship mention incorporated in the sort of eulogy this guy gave.

AND HE WAS THE ONE WHO PREPARED THE DEAD GUY’S PARACHUTE!

That was so funny! And the reactions! Keegan-Michael Key never fails to make me laugh.

Episode 8: The Wedding

I KNEW BILLY EICHNER WAS GOING TO SING, but I didn’t think it would be this weird!

I love Feliz and Max. They are probably my favourite characters… Mostly because they are the less awful of the bunch.

And Lisa’s ex boyfriend Charlie coming in and punching Ethan and Nick in the face was SO FUNNY. I loved that part.

Season 1 was okay but it wasn’t fully formed. There was something missing to it. The character’s lack of depth and caricature-like presence.

But this season, they showed more emotions. The stories were more compelling and I think they found their voice. It reminded me of Alone Together. Season 1 was a bit rocky and I definitely enjoyed season 2 a lot more… but they canceled it.

Hopefully, Netflix will give “Friends From College” another shot. We need to know what happens with Lisa and Ethan! And the baby! And Felix and Max!

[Update: They cancelled Friends From College so… yeah. Thanks Netflix.]

Do you agree about season 2’s improvements? Where do you think the story is going?
