Riverdale – s03 ep07 – Chapter Forty-Two – “The Man in Black” – REVIEW

You guys…. What is happening?! This is too much! Too much is happening on this show! I’m overwhelmed!

I had totally forgotten this was the three part episode like in season 2! I liked it… Weirdly enough, I did like “Chapter Twenty: Tales from the Darkness” better…

Anyway… For the winter hiatus, I’m planning on writing a Riverdale related blog post every week until the show comes back! Let me know in the comments if there is a topic you would like to discuss or even if this idea might interest you!

Jughead & Archie

Right from the beginning, Jughead bites back as Archie starts being just a tiny little bit mysogynistic

He is 100% right. Betty can fucking save herself. As Jake Peralta said:

SHE DON’T NEED NO MAN!

Jake Peralta, Brooklyn99:”HalloVeen

“Cal”… Cole… COME ON IT’S  ALMOST THE SAME NAME!

And Archie… STOP FLIRTING WITH HER, YOU DUMBASS!
Goddamit, you are so insufferable!

As Archie does his thing, Jug goes into town investigating and it is super weird… it reminds me of an episode of Fringe “Welcome To Westfield”…

Jug mentioned Jingle jangle and I was like: “eheheeh it’s still funny.
It kind of freaks me out that Archie is so into this farm… it feels like he is under a spell or something like that. Oh, and he is kissing the girl. If she cuts him with the razor blade Joaquin-Style, I’ll laugh so hard.

It was nice seeing Cole in his element with camera hung around his neck, taking pictures left and right.

And then this fucking moron (Archie, obviously) tells Laurie who you really he, who is he running from, he actually says out loud the name “Hiram Lodge“. Could you be more stupid?

THE MAN IN BLACK.

Everybody keeps saying it’s Hiram… If this was a well written show it wouldn’t be him. Is the man in Black is actually him, I’m going to be so disappointed. To be honest, I will also be disappointed if it’s not him. Anyway, there are no good options.
Archie, why the fuck are you eating eggs with the spoon? IDIOT.
It was fucking obvious that she was going to walk him in the end with a pan! Who wrote this shirt?

Aaaaaaaaaand “The Man in Black” is Hiram Lodge. OF COURSE IT’S HIRAM, YOU DINGUS! You fucking morons…

THIS IS SO PREDICTABLE.

or we could stay and fight?

ONE BAD IDEA AFTER BAD IDEA, ARCHIE! Jughead, please, get out of this ugly situation as soon as possible!

I’ll tell you: “put some sense into him!“, but it would be hilarious because Archie is dumb so THAT would be impossible.  And so they run to Toledo, to see Jughead’s mom.

Oh no, don’t worry. It’s not gonna be awkward!

She just skipped town with his sister and left him in Rverdale with his gang leader and alcoholic father. (Sorry FP but let’s not forget season-1-you).

Veronica

Veronica leaves the Pembrooke, starts sleeping at the Speak Easy and gets into business with Elio.

No, jokes aside… I love that she is distancing herself from her parents, trying to make it on her own and to keep her business afloat.

I admire her. She is working hard and sacrificing a lot.

I am not too keen on her going to Daddy for some advice on how to deal with Elio.

And how is it possible that she hadn’t figured out Elio was a mobster and a criminal?

He owns casinos, he is the son of one of “Daddy“‘s friends and she thought he was reliable?

This is the kind of storytelling that gets on me nerves. SHE IS NOT AN IDIOT! How come she got in business with him!?

Oh and I’m loving Reggie’s outfits this seasons!!! SO BOLD! I love them

And then she finds out that Elio is somehow cheating and she bets the entire establishment AND the Speakeasy!! She crazy! Bold move. I love her.

She wins of course, she was in with the dealer but I loved her attitude and empowering stances.

Betty

I’ve been worried for Jughead for two episodes when I should have really been focused on Betty.

Her part of the episode is almost entirely her own interal monologue with some amazing lines, delivered brilliantly by Lili Reinhart. Suffice to say, there is not doubt in ANYONE’s mind that her performance is the highlight of the show. SHOW, not episode.

“Make them think that you are sane…”

Betty Cooper

Betty tries to escape the Sisters of Quiet Mercy by acting as normal as she can.

All the girls are given “candy” that turns out to be… FIZZLE ROCK! Betty manages not to eat them and tries to befriend Ethel, who has legit gone CRAZY.

Also, dear Betty… DON’T THROW THE DRUGS IN THE BIN! THEY ARE GOING TO FIND THEM, YOU DINK!

Sister Woodhouse apparently takes girls into the Gargoyle King’s chambers to… scare them? Ehm…. WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!

“Betty…. I don’t think Jughead is into you anymore.”

Ethel

HER FACE WAS EVERYTHING

And can we talk about Betty’s internal sassyness!? Best. Part. Of. The. Episode.

But then look who shows up?

What is Claudius Blossom doing here!? WITH HIRAM LODGE, nonetheless!

And the crazy bitch fight with Ethel?!? Followed by a seizure?!

Lili Reinhart’s acting as improved esponentially. She has been incredible this season. She really stepped up her game and it shows. She carries the whole thing on her shoulders. I’ve said it before… As much as I like Cole, Camila and KJ, Lili’s acting is something more.

I DON’T GET WHY BETTY IS NOT WORTHY. WHY ISN’T SHE? WHY DOES ETHEL KEEP REPEATING THAT?! WHAT THE FUCK DOES IT MEAN!?!

Can someone explain this to me please?!

So Betty almost escape through the tunnel Toni and Veronica help Cheryl get away, but it’s a wall now! So they force drugs on Betty and they take her to meet the Gargoyle King and….

BAM!

BRAINWASHED!

We’ve reached the end! I am worried sick about Betty, I do hope Jughead won’t come in running and save her because

MY GIRL CAN SAVE HERSELF, thank you very much.

I’m excited to meet Jellybean and Gladys next episode and hopefully we’ll know more about this G&G bullshit and the Gargoyle King.

Did you like the episode? What are Claudius Blossom and Hiram Lodge plotting? How far are Hiram’s powers extended to?
