Holiday Wrap-up 2017

I’m back from my holiday! It was good, I got super tanned and read quite a lot.

Let me start by saying this: I did not read as much as I wanted: there was Wi-Fi at the beach! FREE WI-FI!!! For the first time EVER! John Oliver was on, loads of makeup tutorial and a ton of bookish videos. How could I resist?!

Even though I was quite absorbed with my tv shows and youtube videos, I am quite happy with the selection of books I managed to finish.

So in 2 weeks, I read 5 books:

  • The Truth About The Harry Quebert Affair by Joel Dicker

19301797I’ve wanted to read this book for ages and I finally did it! There are flaws and some of the main focus points were a bit ridiculous but it was fast-paced and extremely engaging. If you are looking for a murder mystery book you can’t put down, I’d recommend this one. The relationship between Harry and Nola felt a bit stupid, but I couldn’t stand the romance between them. I wasn’t impressed by Quebert’s obsession of scribbling Nola’s name everywhere… it sounded like he was a 12-year-old school boy. But maybe this is exactly what the writer intended. Other than that, this book is an amazing page turner.

I LOVE the writing: simple, quick, no long descriptions and engaging.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars!

  • Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare

12957I wanted to read it again just to see the play with David Tennant and Catherine Tate… but I haven’t seen it yet! 🙄

The play was longer than I imagined and more difficult! “Othello” was definitely easier but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Reading it in English was quite challenging, I have to admit it. The edition I have has a translation of the right side and sometimes I had to read it in italian to properly understand what was going on.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars!

  • Aristotle and Dante Explore The Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

12000020I read this book in two days. I could not put it down. Absolutely adored it. It is definitely worthy of all the hype that has been going around.
Although at times I felt like some of the conversations between Dante and Aristotle were weird and (in my experience) a bit forced, I LOVED IT.

It made me feel warm inside, happy and sad at the same time. The two families were probably one of the most amazing things of the book.

Would recommend it to EVERYBODY. Please read it. It’s truly wonderful! The writing is very good, quick and fast-paced and at the same time full of emotions.

I am picking up Benjamin Alire Saenz’s second book as soon as I can!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 stars!

18302455This book is completely useless.
Nothing happens. Literally nothing. I was waiting for something, even a tiny little bit of action… but it never did.
And not in a cute Downton Abbey kind of way.
The main character Mae is totally stupid, has no personality and she is just terrible.
You just follow her journey of becoming an even bigger idiot throughout the course of the book.

I gave it two start just because the message of the book isn’t too made. I make you think of what kind of society we are becoming. But if you are into this genre, I suggest not reading this and watching “Black Mirror”. A thousand times better.

I am sorry I wasted time reading this. The premise was good, the delivery poor. It made no sense to me. There was no beginning, no end, no resolution, no tension, no problems.
400 pages of nothing.

I don’t usually write negative review, but this was dumb.

⭐⭐ 2 stars!

23299522I studied russian in school and I read parts of “Il cappotto” (The coat) in its original language. I tried to read other classics but russian novels are intimidating. These two short stories are hilarious and make no sense. They are so fun to read and although the ending is not a happy one, you won’t be disappointed.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 stars!

Hope you liked this wrap-up and please let me know your opinions or any recommendations you might have.

Thanks for reading!

My Music – June / July 2017

I’ve been really into music these past months. Spotify has been my saviour whilst my relatives talk for HOURS about shit I don’t care about.
Yes, I’m depicting the typical “teen angst” but hear me out: the same two topics over and over again. For 24 hours a day. Your ears would be bleeding too.

Anyway, I have been glued to my phone and headphones.

One of the thing I love most is reading while listening to acoustic and sad music. It just relaxes me and it helps me concentrate.

One of the songs that I have been obsessed with is “Sign of Times” by Harry Styles.
This was a shocker for me. I was never into One Direction and altought I have been unwittingly following their career (if you are on Twitter you can’t not know what’s happening in their live), I never thought I’d like the song.
But I ADORE it. It is such a GOOD SONG!!!! I love it! It’s been on repeat for the last couple of days.
I love the “wind sound” at the beginning, the ballad beat and the suffering tone of the entire tune. Basically everything I love. I am in love with it, I have been listening to it on repeat, especially when I do the dishes (since it’s the only time, aside from the shower, where I am alone. 🙂

The next artist I want to share is Tom Rosenthal. I’ve discovered him through the YouTuber Will Darbyshire and I immediately fell in love with his songs. He has been writing and composing music for some years and his latest album “FENN” is PERFECTION.

In albums, it is rare to like every tune but I LOVE every single one of the songs. They are so good. What I love about Tom is that he writes music about the silliest topics imaginable. His scruffy voice manages to hit both extremely high and low notes.

He has such a calm and deep rythm!!!! I adore him. I am in love with him, his songs and his voice.

I have heard “Liability” by Lorde for the first time on SNL and I literally fell in love with it. I love the melancholic beat and Lorde’s scratchy voice gives me the chill every single time.

I looked for the sheet music online and I started learning it. It is pretty easy and repetitive, but the melody and the chord work magnifically together.
It’s such a sad tune and I have been really into this sound!

I hope you liked this post all about music. I’ve never done anything like this, but I had so much fun figuring out the reasons why I like these songs.

Let me know what you have been listening this summer. I’d love recommendations!

Thanks for reading!

Fantasy

Fantasy. Sci-fi. Supernatural.

I. Can’t. Stand. It. Anymore.

In the last couple of years, the fantasy/sci-fi genre was enormously expanded. And I just can’t stand it.

Just to name a few of the latest (and not so latest) tv shows: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Riverdale, Daredevil, Shadowhunters, Luke Cage, Ironfist, Stranger Things, Westworld, Game of Thrones, Jessica Jones, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, Supernatural, Once upon a time, Te Vampire Diaries, The Original, The O.A., Sleepy Hollow, Gotham, The 100, Grimm, the upcoming The Defenders and of course BBC’s Doctor Who . And I didn’t even have to google anything. These are just from the top of my head!

THERE ARE TOO MANY!

And these are only the most popular! OH! 12 Monkeys! That one I like.

Of course in this list there are shows that I love and regularly watch: GOT, Jessica Jones, 12 Monkey, Westworld and Doctor Who. But that’s it. And it’s already too many.

Half of the shows I mentioned are related to each other. WHY. WHY.

I have read fantasy books and have seen a couple of movies and I tried to give a try to most of these shows. Some series are a must, something you HAVE to watch. Even if you don’t like this genre. Game of Thrones’ epicness makes the fantasy element irrelevant.

I was obsessed with “The Hunger Games” and my love for “Harry Potter” will last for all eternity. I love a GOOD fantasy story. But this has been getting out of control for a long time.

To find a series about normal life and reality is basically impossible. Mostly because I have already seen A LOT of the series that are being produced, but that’s irrelevant.

I’m tired of seeing people with capes, masks, letters of their chest, strange and mostly useless superpowers, weird zombies… OH! THE WALKING DEAD!!!!! HOW COULD I FORGET ABOUT THIS SHOW! Defenitely don’t like it.

I hope this phase will quickly pass and that we will get out of this current obsession.

Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, ABC, FOX, CW, NBC, CBS (and all the other networks), please produce series about reality, people’s normal lives and struggles that don’t involve saving the planet from aliens or villains.

To the writers and producers: please more series like “This is us“, about real life. Or a show that criticises current society and that makes us think. Really think.

But the most important people are the viewers. Because the people above make what the audience want. So, let’s move on from these genres. Please. Please.

I’m literally begging.

Jenna Coleman

I love Jenna Coleman.

Actually, to tell the truth, when she was cast to replace the adorable Karen Gillian on Doctor Who, I did not like her. Sorry Jenna.

But as soon as I saw her with Matt Smith and the lovely character she portrayed: I was in love. The chemistry she had with Matt was wonderful. Absolutely stunning. And even though she left Doctor Who, I started following her career. And her fashion appearances.

Let’s just say that from soap opera actress, Jenna turned into a true queen of the red carpet. Although the majority of what she wears is something I would NEVER go for, it is still magnificent.

I particularly love her in this picture from the premiere of Victoria, the ITV drama about Queen Victoria.

I love this look. It is definitely something I would wear and I did. Several times after seeing this photo. I absolutely ADORE IT!

So I want to share the product I use in order to re-create this warm and, at the same time, sultry makeup.

I wasn’t able to find the exact products her makeup artist used (This is her instagram page), but I tried to make it word with whatever I have.

I apply the gold/coppery creamy eyeshadow by Pupa in the shade 002 all over the lid, blending it up towards the brow.

So then I take the orange and light brown shade from the palette mixed together (they have no names. Sorry.) and apply them on top of the gold eyeshadow, blending them until I get the shade I want. Then I take the same two colours and I apply them on my lower lashes. And you can go as low as you want and make it as grungy as you want.

Just to give it a little bit more depth, you can put some of this dark brown Kiko “Smart Colour eyeshadow in 05  in the crease or (what I actually do most times), close to the lash line and blending it with the other colours. Also, just a tiny bit into the outer part of the lower lashes.

Lots and lots of mascara and then the lipstick! This lipstick is the KIKO Velvet Passion Matte Lipstick in 317 “Wine”.

As a little bonus, you can take some sparkly orange eyeshadow and put a bit in the inner corner in order to give it some “pizzazz” (I think it’s a word.).

So, this is my take on the look. I have tried to take a picture of the look on me, but it is shit and I don’t want to post it.

Also, I got inspired by the look Emma (who has the beauty channel EmmasRectangle on Youtube) did. So if you want to actually see it, head over to her channel and watch the amazing tutorial she did.

Hope you enjoyed this post. It’s the first time I did something like this and I’m not sure if the format is right for me.
