When I first heard about the show I was like: “No. Not watching this. No.”
And if I hadn’t watched it, I would have missed one of the most weird and absurd tv series of the last few years.
Also, its theme is unusual: it’s about an Orchestra in New York. And it’s so good.
IMDb says: “Love, money, ambition and music intertwine in Mozart in the Jungle, a half hour comedic drama that looks at finding yourself and finding love while conquering New York City. A brash new maestro Rodrigo stirs up the New York Symphony as young oboist Hailey hopes for her big chance.”
The series is inspired by a book (which I still have to read) written by Blair Tindall: “Mozart in the jungle: Sex, drugs and classical music”.
The show is completely insane. The Maestro is totally out of his mind… He was born and raised in Mexico and he is a carefree spirit with almost no regards for manners and protocol, a behaviour that will anger the orchestra’s managers. He often has visions about Mozart and Bach talking to him, he believes everybody has to play “with blood” and… well, he is an artist.
And he can’t pronounce Hailey’s name. He calls her “Hi-Lee”… It’s just too hilarious!
The show won two golden globes, an Emmy and I believe it definitely deserves it. You learn the underbelly of the orchestra, the power games and the sexual relationships. Oh yeah, people in this show have sex.
Also, the Orchestra is completely mad. There is one guy whose only job seems to be reminding others to take bathroom breaks, another one that sells all types of pills and narcotics and the cellist with a tendonitis problem.
And it’s impossible to forget the Maestro’s obsession of using the lady’s restroom. It’s just so weird and beautiful and… It makes you see classical music in an entire different way: it’s not something boring and for old people but it fuels the musicians, it’s their passion and their lives’ work.
The actors are phenomenal: Lola Kirke who plays oboist Hailey Rutledge, Gael García Bernal as Maestro Rodrigo, Saffron Burrows, as Cynthia, Bernadette Peters as Gloria and Malcolm McDowell as the former conductor. They are just so good! Personally, the Maestro is my favourite. He is just too crazy! Completely MAD!
Season 3 is coming back December 9th on Amazon Prime and I ABSOLUTELY recommend watching the first two, particularly episode 6 of season 2 “How to make God laugh”: UTTERLY BEAUTIFUL!
Moreover, season 3 was almost entirely shot in Venice! Literally an hour away from me! I was so upset when they announced on Twitter that they had just left Venice! I would have tried to be there! I don’t even want to talk about it: I am still too angry.
I have been waiting for almost a year and finally it’s here!!! TOMORROW!
Even if it’s not your genre, watch it. You won’t regret it.
